I usually pick the boidies some grass seed-heads from the vacant blocks behind my house - they are more bush than blocks - no through roads and only one house. But I have noticed that one of the areas where I have gotten grass in the past (not in the last week) is all browned off and can only conclude that it has been sprayed. I am now playing the waiting game - waiting to see if the little guys are going to end up with any adverse reaction (or worse!) to any spray they may have eaten. All looks good so far, but after a long talk with my favourite (and very knowledgeable) vet nurse, with toxicology tests being out of the question, I am about to make my budgies the world's most watched! What am I looking for? The usual signs of illness - fluffed up, watery poops, sleepiness, twitching or shivering, sitting on the bottom of the cage, lethargy, vomiting. Anything different in their behaviours. Hopefully I am worrying for nothing, but it is going to be an anxious wait.

Oh, I hope you don't have any problems. All those are things to look out for, as well as weird things like blindness.
If people are spraying, they really should put signs up for the safety of pets and children. It is very irresponsible. Councils do it as well without any notice. It's not on really.

Normally the sprays used aren't a problem to pets (cats or dogs) or humans, and it isn't the council who has done it, so I can't complain that they haven't informed anyone. It is privately owned ................. so I guess, his grass by rights. I can't pass on the blame (unfortunately), but hoping it was round-up as it is considered rather harmless. I must shoulder the responsibility myself. Watching and waiting...................

And now another worry! I have just noticed what looks to be a small abnormality around Smudge's preening gland! I am getting it checked out tomorrow. Hope it is nothing.

If the grass has only just gone brown, the spraying is likely to be more recent than a week ago, don't you think? That stuff works fast on grass. I'm pretty sure you're safe on that poison front at least.

Just back from the vets with an indignant Smudgy who was a little darling. She has scraped it and stained it and checked her poo (I did have a concern there) and no nasties in the poop, no mites of any kind lurking and causing mischief (I would have been surprised) but she is going to get another opinion and get back to me regarding removing the cyst-type thing, mostly because of where it is - around her gland. So basically looks like we will be back again next week for a semi-major op under anaesthetic, unless there are horrible complications regarding the preening gland being involved.
Smudgy does these little quacky duck noises when she is being held, which she did all the way through, but not once did she try to bite me. She is so good now, her lessons well learnt!
