i had been looking at that link earlier which describes it as a allergen, but isn't that something which you either get or don't get??. like hayfever, you can't have it one minute and cure it the next.

The symptoms are a bit like hayfever, but in this case the allergen damages the lungs.

Not sure Ryan, but my dad was allergic to budgies too so there could be something in that.
Or maybe it's just the degree of allergy that is the variable factor.

Although several diseases can be transmitted from birds to humans...few are carried by common pet birds like cockatiels.. budgies.. parrots and finches... In fact.. people are much more likely to give a pet bird a disease than to get one from handling a bird... Still safety is an important consideration with any pet... and a few bird-related health risks do exist... Some species of pet birds...especially African Greys...produce large amounts of feather dust called Dander.. While the dust is more a nuisance than a health hazard for most... children and people with asthma may be adversely affected if they inhale it... Luckily Budgies produce very minuscule amounts of feather dust.

But enough to cause lung damage if you don't keep to proper cleaning regimes Zippo. I speak from experience!

I believe that everyone would be affected by the dust to one degree or another. But some worse than others.

I believe that everyone would be affected by the dust to one degree or another. But some worse than others. Apparently people with Asthma are more susceptible too because of all the "dander". But those air purifiers help I expect, am I right?

They will help Sam.
Of course you need to vacuum up all of the feathers, dust, seed husks etc too.
It's also good to have some fresh air coming in for a couple of hours a day. Which is why we made screens for our windows.
