It is not considered to be cyst. There is no build up of pus or gunk. More of a keratinous growth. There is no red, angry look to this thing, and it doesn't seem to be causing her any discomfort. Thanks everyone for your tips and concern.
Like everything else, I guess the proof will be in the pudding.
At this stage I am following the recommendations and advice of the vets who have consulted over this thing. All advice has been considered, possibly acted on if or when the need arises.

Oh poor Smudge! I hope that settles down quickly... I love the story about the little cutie flying from your shoulder to the vet's and back again! :-) Did they weigh her in a cage or just get her to go on the scales herself somehow?

I do hope it clears up soon for little Smudge.
She's doing well in the Olympics.

Marianne, it's all the 'roids! ;D Thanks Ruth. She certainly wasn't too fussed. No, the scales were on the bench but bright shiny stainless steel. Mine are white, so she was having none of it, until we put a tissue over the disc, and then she was fine. AS soon as we covered it she hopped straight down off my finger and was okay. Sam, Smudge is off for her second injection tomorrow. I haven't had a look at it, as she is getting a covering dose of AB's as well and so having enough of me holding her for that. They are both getting a daily dose of sunshine for about an hour each day (I have to keep hassling them both to go get in the sun - I am a big meany with a skinny stick that I poke at them through the bars.

Stace - from memory if it was the same as we had it was called Yellow Basilicon ointment and was brilliant at drawing out gunky stuff.

It sounds like it. I don't remember that name, but it was probably made up by the pharmacist back in those days. (1970s) It came in one of those old-fashioned dark brown glass jars, I think.

Hezz - 'roids? You know that is slang for piles? Oops, not the hemor- type! I am meaning the ster- type. Now that you mention it, yes I did, but while Bluey was on his liver tonics etc my hub would always refer to him having his daily 'roids, or steriods. Second injection over and done with now and just a wait and see, mixed with plenty of sunshine.

Oh, Mick, no, she's been great! Not a whimper while that deed has been done. She did take offence to the vet telling her she was "pretty fat" - not our "mother' vet but the only other I would chance with my birds. She has just come back from the Tost Mountains in Mongolia, tracking snow leopards!!! Out of the mouth of my 12 yo "how cool is that!?!?"
I have made mention to the family that here we are trying to counteract a vit D deficiency only to probably head in the other direction and causing my birds to suffer from melanomas! In this kind of intensity, it is a very fine line to tread.

just had another read, it occurs when the feather follicle is soft and cannot burst through the skin, the feather then ingrows and the feather keratin builds up as a yellow pus, one handed ( because the other hand is holding the bird ) i remove the pus and any feather growth with very little blood loss, i then add a dab of propolis, a smother of savlon and most birds are now cured, a small percent will regrow another cyst.
Most of these birds are paired up the same day as the cysts are removed and go on to breed me cyst free chicks
