Managed to get a half-decent photo of this thing that is causing me worry. Has anyone seen anything like it? Her preening gland is in there somewhere. You can see the feathers that should be growing where the growth is, are coming through deformed.

Nice clear photo. Just to clarify for everyone, is that growth ON the preening gland, or is the gland further up and away from the lump?

Oh poor Smudge Hezz, I think Barrie might be the man to diagnose this one. Have you thought about PM-ing him? Not sure but could it be just a sebaceous cyst? Check with Barrie as well as the vet and we'll keep our fingers crossed Hezz x

As Stace said, it's unclear to me where abouts on Smudge this is exactly.
It looks just like the one that Abbie had on her wing.
All I did was clean it regularly and apply savlon, it was gone within 2 weeks.

This doesn't look good. Smudge must be in discomfort.

From the fingers of the guru himself: Quote:
"This appears to be preen gland impaction - best to give antibiotics follwoing avet consultation and provide full health nutritional programe toi support viamin D requireents additional daily sunlight would be recomended We have a very good complete nutritional programme taht would help - your birdie does not require surgical intervention at this stage "
Vet visit tomorrow.
BB, I am not sure! Yesterday I thought it may have been - she was giving odd little squeaks when moving her wings about while stretching, but I haven't noticed anything like it today.
Stace, I had seen that, which raised more questions than it answered. But I sent this photo off for a more meaningful diagnosis, so pretty happy to follow his suggestions.
Stace and Marianne, it is really hard to see, I know. I myself am not sure how the gland is involved, but the whole growth is where her gland is. That is how I noticed it - when she lifted all the feathers out of the way to get to her gland.
Thanks Sam. x

a cyst caused by an ingrowing feather , it will grow longer and wider , removing them is easy but they do grow back

Do you mean you sent the photo off to Rob Marshall? Or am I misreading that...

If that were a human cyst, you might try moist hot-packs. Don't know if she'd wear that though!

the cysts contain a feather and or keratin which needs to be removed

Happy to report all vets concurred regarding treatment. Silly me didn't understand properly which vitamin my local vet was talking about - that slight accent - and Smudge has just had her first vit D injection. Another next week, with a dose of AB's in between. She was a little playful when it came to hopping on the scales and kept flying from my shoulder to the vet's and back again. Got there eventually. Just have to work out a routine to give them both a little dose of sunshine ALL year round. And we are working out ways and means.

Barrie, I think the antibiotics are used if they test the gunk in the cyst and find it's caused an infection or secondary infection. Not for general cyst treatment.
If you can Hezz, I'd use warm water compresses on it as well to both clean and eventually release the puss stuff that's likely in there.
When I was a kid, I remember there was a kind of wound/boil/abcess/acne salve we had in the medicine cabinet. It was really really thick and gluggy, like a mix of Manuka honey and salt that was used to draw out and disinfect skin infections. I've never seen stuff like this in pharmacies anymore, but it really did its job.
