Female (unconfined) age 10mths A week ago started to sleep more, feathers are fluffed out, crop is swollen looking and she appears to have trouble swallowing everytime she eats. She seems to pant while sitting and is occasionally twitching while sleeping. She is still flying and occasionally playing with the male, but most of the time she can't be bothered with him. Her back end seems swollen, but clean and seems to pulse in and out. She is allowed to fly freely every day in our conservatory. Her diet has seed, millet, fresh lettuce, cucumber, carrot, parsley, cuttle fish and iodine block. They both sit in my ukka tree daily, and at the beginning chewed it to make comfortable perches. They chew occasionally ( and more often when i'm not looking probably) but stop when told off. Please help if you can, our nearest avian vet is some distance away.

Hi I would get rid of the Yucca. Lots of wood types is unsafe for budgies . Willow Apple Pear are safe bets. There are a few more look in the post on Safe wood...B.J

Yukka is supposedly safe for budgies. But I would make the effort and get her to the vet. She sounds uncomfortable.

Thank u all for all you help and advice. I took her to vet yesterday and she said she thinks she has systemic yeast infection and after a crop wash she discovered lot of extra bacteria. She has been given nystin, flagyl and baytril. She's been given a 50/50 chance

Although the vet gave her meds and she was a little better for a while, I fear my lack of experience at administering the meds (catching her in the first place-although hand tame, she knew it wasn't going to be much fun getting three different meds forced upon you). Actually I'm not sure who is more stressed out by the whole event. Having never had a pet before (allergies) I didn't realise it was possible to get so attached to a little budgie. Thank you all for your concern.

Hi again - is it possible to get someone to either help you with giving the meds or do it for you? While I am not in UK, and your circumstances are different, I know my vet (the nurses anyway) is able to provide this, or better still get them to show you exactly how to hold her and how to administer them. You will feel more confident with the right technique to follow.

With some crop infections, you'll also need to continually clean things the bird is touching with her mouth. If she's regurgitating at all, she'll reinfect herself if she goes back to that same toy/perch/thing.

Hope she gets better soon. It is so difficult when these little friends are ill. Hezz has a great idea about having the vet or technician help with the meds. Keep us posted.

Thank u again for your help and advice. We got a lot better today at giving her med, what was left we mixed with seed and finger fed it to her. The nystatin smells like cherries so I think that masks the smell of the other two meds. I presume it's ok to mix them as she's to get all three at same time. We figured it be less stressful for her with one syringe. The Agy doesn't sound good and it doesn't give me much hope she'll survive

Hi h20 thanks for asking. She is no worse no better. She did take all her med, albeit mixed with millet. luckily she likes to be finger fed and spoon fed lol . i wish id had more experience with budgies and had recognised symptoms such as fluffed out feathers, as ill, rather than just thinking she was cold!!! I'm upset at myself for not taking her to a vet more quickly, but i did phone and told them all the symptoms i'd spotted and i was just told to keep an eye on her. Hence i ended up taking her to a different vet. i'll post a photo of the pair of them in the other section. it's quite funny " a trip to the vet" lol
