A little while ago I showed you all a budgie 'gym' I bought for the budgies (when they eventually arrive) and I am washing the gym this morning. I immersed it in quite hot water and it has shown up all the glue that has been used. This didn't show before it got wet, now shows up white. See pics. It is in all the places where little beaks will chew bits of wood. I have managed to scrape most of it off with a stanley blade, but am now concerned that it may be harmful. The gym was a DIY put together toy and one would assume no glue had been used as it looks like it all slots in together. Please help you guys, what do you think, should I use it or throw it away? Hmmm. I see your problem. If you scrape it all off, then sand it back so all the glue is gone, will it still hold together?

Thanks Stace, that is a good idea to sand it down. I am sure it will hold together as there must be some glue still inside. Thank you for that idea, I really like the play gym and would be upset to throw it away. I just hope the budgies will like it too.

Some glues are okay for budgies. But I'm not sure which ones they are. Someone on here will know.
Can you also ask the supplier what the glue is?

PVA glue and hot glue-gun glue are safe, Shirl. If you can find out what glue was used. A stanley knife should get rid of any offending glue that is visible, and if, after that assault on your new gym, it looks like it may come apart, stainless steel screws are the next best thing to hold it all together. Even if the pieces are dowelled in together they still will need reinforcing. Good luck.

Thanks Hezz, the gym looks and feels quite firm, there must be some glue deep in each hole holding it together so I don't think it will need reinforcing. As said to Stace I am waiting for a response about the glue from Zooplus. They should be aware that some glues would be dangerous as they do supply loads of bird stuff. Thanks for your advice and for yours Stace.

Hello you guys. Zooplus have replied to my e-mail and say: "We would like to inform you that 47235.0 Natural Living Playground for Parakeet is made by Trixie. They are well-known and respected and the product and all parts will have been approved as safe in the EU.
For this reason, we can reassure you that the product is pet-safe. " I have searched Trixie on the internet and unfortunately only came up with a PORN site !!!! Yes PORN!!! (Phew that was close!!) or a horseracing site. Anyway, Zooplus have assured me that their product is pet safe so I shall have to take their word for it.

Sorry, but that response does not give me any confidence at all. The product is pet-safe? I would want to know whether it is specifically budgie-safe. If it were my gym, Shirl, I would still be giving that glue a good scrap off.

If it were my gym, Shirl, I would still be giving that glue a good scrap off. I completely agree with you there Hezz. I have sent another e-mail specifically asking what sort of glue it is. However, I have thoroughly cut off all the glue I can see and the gym has had a very good wash and spray with FS10. I can't see any exposed glue now so feel quite confident it is now safe.

I have the same one I think I will watch out for the glue good post ! Liz - I couldn't see the glue until I immersed the toy in hot water which obviously caused a reaction and turned the glue white. When the toy arrived you could not see any glue whatsoever, so beware!!

I'm sorry to say that my gut feeling is that the phrase "safe in the EU" just means that the glue complies with the rules for human safety- you need to know the chemical content of the glue with respect to how safe it is for a budgie. Badger Zooplus a bit more, they are a good company and should know (if they don't already) how dangerous a lot of things are to birds that are considered safe under normal situations. They have a responsibility to you as a consumer and you have a responsibility as a pet owner. Ask again!!
