For all us indoor caged budgie owners (or soon to be) do our feathered friends need to be in a certain amount of sunshine sometimes? If so, how much and how often? I can put my budgie cage (on a stand) near a very large open window but it would never actually be in the sun and not really possible for me to do this.

Hey I don't think they have to be in the sun, though they do enjoy it, certainly not direct sunlight unless they have access to shade too. Someone will probably come tell me I'm wrong now still learning hehe. X

;D Ooooo thanks Hezz. I shall have to arrange my budgie spring thing, and 'tree' type toy that I am getting in the window where the sun comes through. They can perch there for as long as they like when they are out of their cage and retreat to the shade when they want to. Thanks so much for that advice and the links you attached. ;D ;D Thank you also Sweetie. ;D ;D

;D That second link Hezz was sooo useful. The Burkesbackyard.com link about Vitamin D. It took me a while to get to the right place but if anyone else wants to check it out its very informative. They should search 'factsheet'. I have copied the most important bits and attached it here (hopefully). It is quite a long read but well worth it. I am now thinking of getting another cage so that I can move the birds outside occasionally - I can sit with them in the sunshine! So cool!!! (or hot even!!! ;D) Attachments:

Just remember, Shirl, that sun through glass doesn't have the same benefits, so yes outside is the only solution really.

Bit difficult if you live in a top floor flat with no balcony tho Hezz but will definitely keep in mind for if and when we move!

I plan to do the same Sarah, will mean getting a smaller cage tho, cos the one I have is HUGE!! and I couldn't carry it downstairs (my lounge is on the first floor). Perhaps that will have to wait til next year now with winter on the way (not that it is cold here yet - quite the opposite in fact. But what a good excuse to 'budgie guard' he he!!!

Don't have a solution to that problem - cut a hole in the roof??? I know - one of those fancy sliding roof systems, like the big tennis centres have but with a netting cover so the birds don't truly fly high!!! ;D

Hezz - oh - thought they would get their Vit D through glass, will have to definitely take them outside then and in the mean time give them their vitamins thru their diet in the winter.

Unfortunately vitamins added through diet doesn't quite compare to vit D3 from the sun. But if they get some sun on a regular basis, this should suffice.

God the things we do for our budgies?!!! ;D

We keep our budgies in the conservatory, when its sunny I open the french doors and push the cage right into the open space. They love it but unfortunately our neighbours don't!!(don't know if you've read any of my posts on 'complaints from neighbours') you all seem to have better neighbours than me, please can I come and live next-door lol
