It's definitely worth a try Serz. I have had a couple of chicks that were around 2 weeks old that had splayed legs. I used the make-up sponge method. Now you'd never know that they were splayed as babies. I will find some photo's for you.

Sorry Hezz, I don't have before and after photo's This little guy I pulled out of the nest box today he/she is 14 days old. It doesn't have splayed legs but I took some photo's to show Serz the make up sponge method. They can still walk around with this on. I leave it on for 7-10 days. Its very easy to put on and you just tear the sponge to remove. Get yourself a pack of cheap makeup sponges. 2 tubes, I used two 4 pens or you can even use some thin card rolled into a 5-6mm diameter. Then cut two tiny holes and push the tubes to the edge of the sponge. Trim excess. Put chicks leg (1 at a time is easier) in tube, over 'knee' , and gently hold sponge in place with one hand and remove tube with the other hand. Repeat for other leg. Hope this makes sense.

Excellent demo, Rachael. What you can't do with some No. 8 fencing wire and a make-up sponge ain't worth doing.

Thats good to hear it has worked for chicks over 10 days It has only ever happened to one chick of mine and I was told at that time that 10 days old was the limit for putting on splints. Best of luck to you and your chick Serz

thanks so much rachel for that step by step demonstration. I will go and get some make up sponges tomorrow and have a go. I really hope that it works. Im scared that its going to hurt him forcing the legs back into a position that they dont want to be in. Thanks for all the advice i would try anything to avoid disposing off him.

have you done it yet? you may have left it too long now considering you said he was ten days old 5 days ago that means the chick is 15 days old today which maybe too late, wont hurt to try!
