I have had my caged budgie for 5 months. I have managed to get him to step up but only with millet in my hand. If I don't have millet and put my hand toward him he jumps onto the side (inside) of the cage to get away from me. Even from outside the cage, if I put my hand towards him he runs away at first. Then he will approach my finger and grab it with his foot then bite. he isn't biting as hard now and has started to chat to my finger like he would to another bird. If he bites I wiggle my finger until he stops.
When I open the cage he hops straight down onto the door to see me. If I put my hand towards him he hops away, but if I put my face towards him he stays and even come closer. he just seems very nervous around my hand. if I have millet in my hand I can get him out of the cage a short way but he jumps back in if I move too far. How can I get him more confident and not scared? Is this slow progress for taming? I don't get to train as much as I would like because I have other birds who are out and don't like them all out together, the other birds are parrots and I worry they will attack Echo.

I suggest you take Echo into another room, no distractions, and work with him for 10 minutes each time, several times a day. The more time you spend with him the better he will become.

Hello Re, nervous or biting birds.
With nervous birds, cover half the cage to make them feel safe & secure but take care not to stand over them like a predator. I always use a small piece of their favourite food as a treat during the taming sessions.
Offer the bird a few pecks of the treat food, through the cage bars. If they show any fear or attempt to bite, remove your hand & the treat for a count of 10. Re-offer the treat & do this as often as it takes..... I have used tweezers, when the birds were really afraid.
Give them treats little & often, so your visits mean nice things to eat. After a day or so of successful feeding, The bird should be ready for you to hand feed them inside the cage.
Hold the treat food close to the perch so they can eat. After a few days of hand feeding. The birds are happy to step-up on your hand to eat.. At this stage you can take the birds from the cage for a fly round,
knowing you can return them with a treat in the cage & a small treat in your hand as a step-up reward...B.J.

I'll give that a go Hezz, thanks.
BJ, I have done all you suggest and can get Echo out of his cage, if he flies around I can get him on my hand with millet and back to his cage. I just can't do it without millet. Is that OK, how long will it take before I can get him to step up without the millet, I suppose it depends on the bird?

Lovely post, Moogie. It does depend on the bird, but the more you are around him too, the quicker he will lose his fear. He may just be a free spirit. I have one of those ........ the rest of the family just call him feral!

Thank you both. I will keep working with him. I know he is interested, he always hops down to see me when I sit near him. I think it's just that tiny trust barrier I have to break through.

I have spent some time with Echo today and he is quite willing to come over to me as long as my hands are out of the way. He has been nibbling my nose, I was kissing his chest and he was very interested in my mouth but as soon as I bring my hands up, he runs back into his cage. I did manage to stroke his belly through the bars twice though. All I can think is he was grabbed and man handled by the breeder.

Hi, Professional trainers & performers always give a treat to ensure compliance. Even if it's only a peck at a millet spray.....B.J.

have you tried slowely putting your hand in the cage then just sitting and talking to him? maybe do this for a week or two-dont move your hand around once in the cage-then after that why not try putting millet seeds in the palm of your hand-it may take a while but i bet in the end you will get him eating out of it-this is what i did with Elf it took ages but he couldnt resist the millet in the end

I had some success last night. I had a piece of millet and got Echo on my hand he kept hopping back off but when I let him eat all the millet without taking it away he finished and sat with me for a while, nibbling my nose and just looking at me until he hopped back to his cage. I put a little perch near his door on the outside and when I'm not looking he comes right out to the end and looks at me, when I look at him he stays there and I can talk to him, I can get very close to him but as soon as he sees my hands he hops back into his cage. I will win though, he's too sweet to give up on and I know he wants to be friends, I can see it in him. My cheeky boy.
