I hope it works. You might find they throw a lot of it out but if you watch they do actually chew it first. I think a lot of the time they suck the juice out and spit out the dry flesh. They still get the goodness from it though.

I would be getting him to an avian vet, to make sure there isn't some underlying cause for all this going on. The vet will also be able to tell you if his beak needs trimming, and do it if necessary. It is really hard from photos to see the full size of the beak as they do curve in towards their face. It could be simply an iodine deficiency. Iodine in their water can quickly turn this around, but again, the vet is your best bet. And ........ While I don't wish this on anyone, another reason for the cere turning brown is testicular cancer/ hormonal imbalance. See a vet.

Oh dear I'm really worried now. Just to be better safe than sorry I will try to get him to the vet asap. Unfortunately It's easter so no clinic will be open until Tuesday (I think? Monday is bankholiday in UK isn't it?)

Have you tried mixing a small amount of finely grated carrot or apple in with some seed? They have trouble avoiding it that way or even get the tiny flowers from broccoli and mix them with seed. Just a few ideas. You've probably already tried them. Actually, that is the only thing I haven't tried. I have tried to grate a mixture and put it in a separate bowl near the seeds, chopped them in different sizes... But I didn't think of mixing it with the seed. I will do that tommorrow and hopefully this will improve his condition. This is a good idea but you must remember to throw out the seed after a few hours if it has veg in it as the veg will turn bad and you'll end up feeding your budgie bacteria ridden seed inadvertently! Just use a small amount of seed at a time, roughly a teaspoon or two- not fill the whole pot just to waste it. Don't put veggie seed in overnight for the same reason!! I hope Charlie is OK, these things always happen over bank holidays

Sarah, it certainly does! There's an exotic vet not far away from me but there's at least 2 ordinary vets even closer. I will try to get an appointment with the exotic vet but if that doesn't work and I take him to an ordinary vet, how big are the chances that an ordinary vet diagnose him wrong?

It really does depend on your ordinary vet! I don't have an avian vet within cooee of me, but the lady I take my bird to does a lot of the wildlife rescue birds in the area, and has an avian vet she liaises with if necessary, as she did for me. The vet who actually owns the surgery, I will not allow to touch my birds! I don't like his bird-manner ...... for want of another way to describe it. Don't be too down about the whole thing yet! It may be a very simple thing, easily explained and you will wonder what all the fuss was about. But for the best diagnosis for Charlie, I would be getting him to the avian vet, not a regular vet. And we all hope the diagnosis is for something that is really nothing!

Wait for the exotic vet if it's possible to be seen by midweek or so, as long as Charlie doesn't seem to need urgent assistance in the meantime of course. Probably won't though, it may be something very simple

Thank you guys, typical its easter weekend! First thing on Tuesday I will call the exotic vet. Fingers and toes crossed its nothing serious! I will try and mix some veg in to his seeds (funny how they can be so different, only need to hold a carrot in front of Toni and she's right at it lol )

Hopefully these images will show his beak better, either way I'm taking him to the vet.

They are a bit blurry, bubs, but so cute! Poor Charlie. Once Charlie comes out of quarantine and the two birds are together, Toni will more than likely get him eating his veggies. They don't like to think they may be missing out on anything the other has, which can work in our favour when we are trying to get them eating their greens. Just like little children.

They are a bit blurry, bubs, but so cute! Poor Charlie. I give up now! Haha trying to take pictures with my phone but keep shaking lol. The flakey/crusty stuff on his cere is building up everyday now, but since I posted here first I have cleaned it off with a cotton swab and a little bit of oil. Do you think it can be scaly face?

I don't think it is, but if you are not sure, it's easy enough to treat, and the treatment, if they don't have it, isn't an issue either........ so give them a dose anyway - both birds. Do you have ivermectin 0.1%?
In the meantime keep doing what you are doing with wiping it regularly with a little oil.
