At least you can keep a proper eye on her now. Hope the AB's work for her.

I've managed to catch her by tempting her onto a long rope perch with wire through it, then transported her straight out of the aviary and through the isolation cage door! Lol,I forgot I'd taught all the chicks how to do that when they fledged! Shes started a weeks course of antibiotics in the drinking water. Her vent is clean but bare, and her poops are large and slightly greenish, but at least she is pooping which means shes still eating :-) At least now shes in a cage on her own I can moniter her droppings properly :-) She is very lively though and less fluffed up if I keep the room warm. Its like Barbados in there lol :-) I've always used ABs in the drinking water too. Everyone keeps telling me I should syringe it, but it seems to work fine for me in the water. Well, for the bird really. The dose is also adjusted for water accordingly.

Thanks for your good wishes everyone. I agree Stace, its much better having the AB in the water for everyone involved! Thanks Lousette. The first Filamel I had was a bantam when I was 4 years old lol :-) The update is Filamel has got no worse and her poops are getting smaller although still greenish and misshapen. Shes really lively, but thankfully not fretting at all in isolation. She has lost quite a bit of weight but is eating reasonably well :-) Unfortunately she is going through a heavy moult which must make her feel even more rubbish :-( Her dad Mega who was also her husband as well in the aviary has not missed her at all! Hes hopped of with Bump the big fat exhibition hen! :-O

My old Jo lapped up his 10 days alone with me and his woman Fern was cosying up to Teddy while he was away. The look on her face was a picture when i put Jo back in, GULP .

Oh my goodness Skysmum, I spoke too soon!
We had an awful night last night. At about 9pm I noticed a huge swelling in her vent even bigger than an egg would be if in there! It almost looked as if she'd prolapse. She had broken blood vessels in the strain :-(
I caught her up and olive oiled the vent and kept bathing it but eventually had to put her back in her cage as we were getting nowhere and I thought she needed to relax to pass anything. To be honest I didn't have a clue what to do. I thought of giving her some guardian angel via syringe but didn't dare put anything more into her when there was no exit available for it to come out! At 5 this morning she was so fluffed up, but had a big dropping stuck to her, but the swelling was the same so I cleaned her up and went to work. I didn't expect her to be alive when I got home from work at midday, but she was, and had started passing droppings again. An awful lot of them and dark ones as they must be containing some blood but the obstruction was gone!
I was tempted to go to the vet again at lunchtime, but thought the journey in her weak state would be enough to finish her off so didn't go. I can't see what they would do as shes already on antibiotics other than put her to sleep, but I didn't think shes ready for that as the swelling had gone down and I saw her taking a good long drink and resume eating again. She has perked up a bit this evening and continued to eat, but still fluffed a bit when resting.
I'm leaving the bird room lights on untill 11.00 tonight to give her an extra chance to keep eating to make up for what she must have missed.

Oh Nat how scary for you and painful for Filamel. Do you know what the swelling was? I do hope this is a turning point for her. Poor little thing.

I hope it was just poop Mizloco. But her vent has been red and slightly inflamed with this infection she has anyway, perhaps the inflamation stopped the poop passing. I really don't know

Ohh poor little mite, perhaps the anti b's are clearing her system. As you say not much you can do, think its a waiting game to see if the medication works its magic. Such a worry for you. Everything crossed for her and you.

Thanks guys :-) It seems like the antibiotics might be keeping her stable, but doing nothing much to cure it. She is eating well and lively, semi fluffed but not much, but vent has become permanently swollen. I now think this is mainly swelling due to infection with a bit of bowel movement blockage as there are some poops on the floor but not enough. I think the swelling is what is stopping the flow so to speak. So really no change apart from some improved bowel movement. She is not unduly uncomfortable yet as her liveliness tells me so. I think its 2 more days on these AB then back for a rethink on the next move
