we have just got back from the vets-as for the mites he could see no sign of them phew...He wasnt over concerned with Elf pulling at his feathers as there is no MAJOR damage or bald spots so i am to mist him every other day and also give him piriton (which he gave us) to see if this will reduce what seems to be itchyness-i have to give this by beak for a week...So all looks good

Sounds as though it can be fixed then, poor Elf, I can sympathise with the itchiness being an excema sufferer! Thank goodness he doesn't have mites though.

Im not sure the meds are helping over the last 3 day Elfie (when in his cage) is continuously pulling nibbling at his feathers (always the ones by his left leg-i will put up a video soon.... I dont know if he is doing it because he has got in to a habit of it after the mites? i can not stop him from doing it and he would do it from morning through to night if he was in his cage that long-its really starting to get me down....he prefers to do this now than play with his toys, bob his head to music ect ect ect.....what do you think guys?

Moogie, I really sympathise with you on this one (Berry has major feather issue). Elf is so, so lovely. It is really sad to see him so preoccupied with his feathers in this way. I really hope the piriton makes a difference.

Poor Elfie. I think I mentioned this before, but maybe when he gets Meeko to play with he might stop this.
Does he do it only at certain times that you can establish? Can you distract him somehow?

Is that the only place he does this behaviour? If so, remove the perch he is standing on. I would also suggest you don't give him attention when he does it. Turn away, leave the room or just ignore him. Giving attention, even negative attention is rewarding the behaviour. It looks to be a habit more that anything else. He probably got attention when he chewed when he had mites and that has enforced the negative behaviour. I have a plucking African grey parrot and have witnessed this kind of thing in him. By giving him attention only when he is not plucking and letting him out of the cage for most of the day we have almost stopped his plucking, he does have relapses but usually when we are out for a long period of time, a whole day mainly.

MoogieI would say that looking at him it is a habit, it's psychological. It very much reminds me of Roswell when he was constantly pulling and picking at his wing feathers. It took months but Roswell got over it. Elf will too, so don't worry. Change his cage around, put different things in every day. As said above don't give attention when he does it. I agree with Stace that things will change when he gets to meet his new buddy.
