MoogieI would say that looking at him it is a habit, it's psychological. It very much reminds me of Roswell when he was constantly pulling and picking at his wing feathers. It took months but Roswell got over it. Elf will too, so don't worry. Change his cage around, put different things in every day. As said above don't give attention when he does it. I agree with Stace that things will change when he gets to meet his new buddy. Thank you so much Marianne, its so distressing to see....i take him out of his cage as much as i can but he doesnt like to be out i would say longer than 2 hours at a time and takes himself back in...i have been ignoring this behaviour which at the moment is almost constant It just came out of no where and has got worse by each day...when he does happen to stop i talk to him and it seems to help but i see him looking up at the bars and in the end the erge is to much and hes back up there doing the same thing.....I really hope when he meets Meeko this will stop and he can have fun again....Only 2 more weeks for that ...

The attention he got at a stressful time, when he had mites, was comforting to him. He started to associate that comfort with the chewing behaviour, so he now thinks he will get the comfort of you talking to him if he chews. By walking away you are telling him that there is no longer comfort for chewing but when he stops he can have as much comfort as he wants. Long may it continue, well done.

Thank you for your help-it is definitely starting to work although as i said he is still plucking but i know he wont stop over night...sadly i can see skin where he has pulled his feathers out but im hopeful with a bit more time and meeting his new friend this will become a distant memory.....

This should make you feel better. My African grey, Toby. He will never grow the feathers back on his chest as he has destroyed the feather follicles. And from behind. He used to be completely bare all round his bum and he had no tail whatsoever.

oh poor Toby......he looks very sweet by the way x I didnt know wether i should take him back to the vets aas he seems like he is itchy....he already had 3 courses of mite treatment and i can no longer see them on his wings-the mites couldnt have lived through the treatment could they? He has had piriton to help with the itches but not sure it has helped....i am just a bit worried still as in 2 weeks time he gets to meet his new friend and im scared he might have something he could pass on...am i worrying to much,im hoping this is just a little habit rather than any thing else....its quite stressful to know what to do (apart from what we are doing of corse) x

Moogie checking around and I found a couple of products which may help you. They are aloe sprays for birds which some have found useful for dry feathers and plucking issues. They are made by Harrisons, the company that makes bird pellets. One's called Avix Rain and the other Avix Soother. Here's a UK buying site. Google around and you might find more info. www.mah-shop.co.uk/healxavix-skin-care-products-35-c.aspAlso, some people mix a little oil into their birds seed every now and again. I know Hezz uses something called The Good Oil for Birds, and others even use cod liver oil. I think it's for the fatty acids which maybe helps with general health and plumage. Someone else might know more.

I guess it depends if Elf is over-preening or not preening enough. For the oil, I've heard of people using both cod liver oil and wheat germ oil, or a half and half mix of both. And even olive oil. Some breeders put it in their soft food, but I'm sure Hezz mixes hers in the seed. I think you use just enough oil to coat the seeds a little so for one bird it would just be a small drop in that day's seed. I imagine they ingest small amounts as they husk the seed. You just use it for that day, as oil goes rancid. I can't remember how often to give it. Hezz seems to be away at the mo, but I'm sure she uses it so will be able to advise.

Sounds as though it can be fixed then, poor Elf, I can sympathise with the itchiness being an excema sufferer! Thank goodness he doesn't have mites though. Me too. I suffer from excema on both hands Great to hear that Elf doesn't have mites Fingers crossed for a quick recovery Nicola

I'm looking forward to trying the feather plucking hahns on it too Stace. They are very fussy eaters, but they seem to like anything oily, so I hope it helps their skin and feather condition :-)
