Hi everyone For as long as I can remember, 2 of my hens have had sort of pop-out cere. They are mother and daughter and both ceres a the same colour. I really want to know if this is anything to worry about and how to get rid of it. Can anyone help? This is the daughter, Georgia And this is her mother, Lilly Notice how both look the same and pop-out? Nicola

It's normal, some hens have these types of cere's.

Thanks Corie You seem to be able to answer all my questions. Thanks Also, as their ceres don't change colour so how can I tell if they are in breeding condition? Btw Georgia is the one I'm hoping to pair up with my rec. pied, Romeo Nicola

Well they peak every seven weeks so keep a eye on them, you should be able to see the change in them. Try putting a branch in with them, breeding hens will strip this and destroy it in no time and if you still can't see a change if their old enough try your luck.

Thanks Corie Both live in an aviary and all perches are branches from trees. They are both old enough- Lilly turned 3 this year and Georgia will be turning 2 on May 21st. I have heard that another way to tell if budgies are in breeding condition is by their eyes. They said that the iris ring will get larger causing the pupil to look smaller. Would this work? Nicola

They do this when courting, so yes if you notice this it's a sign. It's all about getting to know your birds. Your Welcome.

I had a non breeding hen with a very bad case of this before but was told it was normal and not to worry. She was eventually diagnosed with kidney problems, but I have no clue if it was related to the condition. I have since found this info on avianweb.com
Brown Hypertrophy Commonly seen in budgies and may be likened to catarrh of a mucous surface and occurs in many types of chronic ill health. Apparently it is not caused by local infection, and ideally treatment consists of finding and treating the underlying cause. The cere (the structure containing the nostrils) hypertrophies, becoming cornified and keratinized. It may develop a prominent "hornlike" appearance. This condition is most common in female birds and is believed to be associated with breeding in females and estrogen secreting gonadal tumors in males.
Treatment: Conventional vets recommend to moisten and gently remove the heaped-up material (especially if it flakes and blocks the nares), and applying a little oily lotion, cod liver oil, Dettol or bland ointment.

Have you tried Dettol with budgies Nat? Is it safe for them?

I have always thought that the rule for toxic disinfectants for animal was, if it goes cloudy in water it's poisonous to them.

Thanks everyone. I really want to treat it but I don't know what is safe for them Seeing as they are mother and daughter, is it possible for Lilly to have passed it onto Georgia? Nicola

I've not tried detol before, but use F10. Sometimes I have used milton fluid. Dettol can be quite burny can't it if not well diluted

One of our members from either Spain or Greece uses Dettol regularly for cleaning. I have not used it.
