Oh man! That Juliet is one scary mother! Second that. I won't be putting my finger in there any time soon. So happy you have a chick. Hope Juliet turns out to be a good mama!

Unfortunately Romeo and Juliet have decided parenthood is not for them and had the chick for their supper Grim, but I suppose natural. Must be why Romeo was in the nestbox yesterday. They have been very tidy about it and left no evidence at all!

Oh dear... Sorry to hear that Do you think that there might have been something wrong with it and this is a form of recycling? Otherwise surely this would be odd from evolutionary perspective - must be easier / less risky ways to get food..?

Oh what a shame. Maybe it was already dead and they were just disposing of the evidence to stop predators from finding the nest, an instinct thing.

Oh no I hope it didn't suffer. Nature is barbaric sometimes. I watch springwatch and they always show some poor creature suffering. Sorry Nat.

When is the other egg due, Nat? Unfortunately it is a fairly natural thing for parents to do. Maybe a bit more protein in their diet???

Apparently its not uncommon for the first clutch to die with new parents, but for the second clutch to be sucessful. Reasons are usualy because the hen doesn't feed the chick when the eggsac has run out so it is kept warm but quickly starves or sometimes destroyed. In a larger round it can be because a inexperienced cock isn't providing enough food for the chicks. I read a piece by one breeder who siad to let nature take its course as if you keep removing chicks and feeding them then the parents never learn. Eventually they do if left to it. I think in this case they just didn't know to feed the chick, it died so they tidied up :-) I think if they had actually killed it there would have been some signs somewhere of a bleed however tiny. Romeo had started to collect plenty of eggfood prior to hatching to feed to Juliet so they should have had enough protein :-) The next egg is due today. I had a quick peek but couldn't see anything. The firt chick was easy to spot as it had Juliet had shifted off it probably wondering what on earth it was! I'm going to resist the temptation to look until tomorrow afternoon. There will either be 5 dummy eggs and a chick which has been fed, or 5 dummy eggs and a clean nestbox!

Ohhh what a shame Nat, wishing more luck with the other egg, fingers crossed. Still wouldn't put my fingers in there, that's just how the one that bit me looked seconds before the attack OUCH

I'm kinda hoping the other egg doesn't hatch now Skysmum as I don't want to have the thought of them eating the chick again if they don't feed it!

The 2nd egg appears to be dead in shell as its started to turn grey. Juliet is still sitting on all the dummies and the egg. I suppose she'll start trying to tidy up soon to lay another round. I really don't want her to start laying yet again, but I suppose shes at least had 3 weeks break from it. The other thing they say you can do to stop them laying is to separate the pair, but I'd hate to have to do that, but theres only so much egg laying her body will cope with On with the calcivet again!
