You did say they often don't work out the first time. Good luck with a second sitting, Nat.

Thanks guys :-) I won't leave them with any eggs if she starts laying a second round though :-( I'm sort of thinking of making their cage uncomfortable for a while, by removing all favorite things, bowl feed pots and swings so as to try and jog them out of this breeding mode they are in. Really I only added the nestbox to have her comfortable and sit on dummies and stop laying and sleeping on the floor for a bit, and it happened that a couple of people were interested in chicks so I let her keep 2 eggs. I would have been nice to let them be parents if possibe, but in a way I'm quite glad not to have the extra stress for a while :-) I imagine she might start laying eggs on the floor again, but hopefully it can be staved off for a bit longer by making their home tupsey turvey :/

To put broody chickens off sitting on their unfertilised eggs you have to put them in a cage with a wire floor apparently. Sounds awful to me but maybe if you put a wire grill at the bottom of the cage she may not lay. just an idea. I hope she stops soon for you.

That could be a plan Starlingqueen. It may stop her sitting anyway. It may not stop her laying though as she drops them from the swing/ perch/ anywhere really! I was thinking of giving back their old convertable wooden flight cage. Its about 5ft long and 3ft wide, but if I stand it on its end then its so tall like a mini wardrobe that I think that she certainly wouldn't want to go to the floor. And maybe a change of territory will throw her off breeding mode for a while. The only problem is its being used by a rabbit at the moment :/ I chucked her out of the nestbox yesterday and had a look through everything. They didn't eat the chick after all, but had burried it deep in the shavings at the other end of the box!

Hey nat what's happening with Romeo and Juliet?

After removing the nestbox and changing the interior of their present cage around somewhat, Juliet has stopped laying! Yippeeee! They are now back to swinging on the swings together and no more shreading and sitting under the floor paper thank goodness :-) I'm sure it will do Juliet good to get some daylight for a change as its been ages from when she started nesting under the paper on the floor and then sitting in the nestbox. Probably the same amount of time it would have taken to have 2 rounds of chicks!

I think so too! Hope she makes the most of it. And that is the trigger to get my guys out into the sun, right now! - we haven't seen too much of it the last couple of weeks.
