Has anyone ever experienced this?
Boo has suddenly become absolutely hyper crazy. He is completely manic. I took him to the vet this week due to an infection problem and the vet said he was also exhibiting slight oversexed behaviour, which he shouldn't be because it is the middle of winter. I hadn't noticed anything particularly odd in him, but today he is going berserk.
He's stepping from foot to foot in his cage and crawling across the wires. Outside, he's flying back and forth. If I remove him from the microwave door (which he loves) he's going mental. And he just bit me harder than he has ever bitten me before. And he never bites.
He's not speaking Buglish, just calling out in normal budgie.
When he goes back in his cage, I'm going to cover him up for a while.
I'm wondering if it has anything to do with the neighbour's bird I'm bird sitting. But the neighbour's bird has been here for a month with no issue up until now. And the neighbour's bird is also a male.

Well, I just called the vet because I thought Boo was going to kill himself he was so manic.
He said that because Boo is such a vital and happy bird, his sex hormones have a tendency to take over. This heightened sex drive can only be sustained for a while and then it makes him tired. When he's tired, it predisposes him to sickness (which has just happened this week). When hormones go up, natural immunity goes down, making him susceptible to environmental germs which wouldn't normally be of any consequence.
Since I took him to the vet on Monday and Tuesday, as well as penicillin and fungilin meds, the vet gave him several super energy boosters while in the surgery. This has sent his energy levels soaring and hence his sex drive has gone off the scale. It's like he's downed a whole packet of viagra.
However, it's better to keep his energy up to fight the infection than suppress his hormones.
I've just had a lesson in budgie sex drive. The vet says that because the day length is increasing here in Oz (we've just passed winter solstice) and we've had a lot of rain followed by a sunny spell, it's set his hormones off (combined with the viagra-like effect of his vet treatment over the past two days).
I put him out in the sun this morning, and that's what really made him go bonkers in his cage. However, better he gets the immunity benefits of the sun and Vit D apparently. The sexpot thing will pass. It runs on a 7-week cycle, so the vet thinks he's probably at or near his peak.
Blurry well hope so! It's as though he's gone insane. I have never experienced anything like it.

Wow stace, your Boo is definitely one of a kind - I have never heard of this sort of behaviour before in a budgie and can fully understand your concerns. I know you don't need me to tell you that you have done the right thing contacting the vet, and thankfully for you and Boo you have probably the best vet I have ever heard of. I hope this sorts itself out and you have Boo back to normal in no time. Fondest wishes to you both x

Wow, manic little Boo.
Lilek (rip little fella) and Sky both have very high sex drives as does Hector.
They bite like mad, especially if you stop them from doing the deed with your hand!
Not sure what to suggest though, your vet is the expert!

Don't know who to feel more sorry for with this one stace, you or Boo . I think it sounds like the energy boosters as you say coupled with the weather mixing him up. It must be a bit like being on speed, not that i know from personnel experience you understand . I think it would be just as well to keep him a bit quieter for a bit, sounds like he could do himself some damage or pump himself up with too much adrenaline which could also cause probs. Poor little man. Have yourself a brandy stace, sounds like you could do with one and maybe a sip for Booble's.

He's calmed down slightly today, but it's still pretty much all "sexy time" as OH has dubbed it. I'd give him some camomile tea, but he's still on his meds until the weekend.

I am sorry but I had to chuckle when I read this. Poor Boo. It must be hard if your body is telling you to do something and that urge just doesn't seem to go away never mind what you do. "I can't get no satisfaction ... And I try, and I try, and I try" been humming that song since i read your thread

He's supposed to be a bit sick, but you wouldn't think it the way he's tearing around.

Aww bless him - I hope he gets better soon stace, I know it is probably a silly question but roughly how long will it take to sort out? Also because he is on the meds as well as being in his "sexy time" will it still be just the usual period of time that he is in that mode for? If that makes sense?!

The vet said "sexy time" lasts for around a 7-week cycle. I'm not sure where we're up to.

You know what's really funny. Boo likes to vocalise when he's at it. His favourite for the task is his trademark "Fiddle de dee potatoes!", but said in a kind of rhythmic manner in tune with his sexy time rhythm.
My mum is coming to stay next week, and I sincerely hope he's over this by then. It's a bit embarrassing.

Hope he gets his urges under control before mum comes.

He's calmed down a bit today. Still a bit hyper but he's back to sitting on my shoulder and getting little nose to cheek rubs. Back to the vet tomorrow to see how his blocked intestines and infection treatments have progressed.
