My baby budgie Brodie doesn't play very much at all, to begin with I thought he was just settling in but I've had him 7weeks now & I'm wondering if actually he doesn't know *how* to play, does this sound feasible? And if so how can I teach him?! He has mirrors, bells, a ladder, paper shredding toys, a swing etc. To start with I limited the amount of things in the cage but over the weeks I've added things. He regularly chats to his mirror, has on occasion rang his bells & sometimes chews his paper toys but mostly he just ignores things; if I hold something up to him he'll happily chew it but as soon as I put it back he ignores it even if it's still right by him. He's the same with fruit/ veg: however enthusiastically he's tucking in, as soon as it's put back in the clip he leaves it be. He's quite mobile around the cage so it's not that he can't get to them. I feel Brodie's life could be far more enriching & fun if he enjoyed play & would appreciate any advice. Thanks

I had a budgie few years ago who never learnt to play, he was very quiet too, sounds like your little 1 is a bit more adventurous, I now have a cockateil who doesn't play at all, had her nearly 5 years now she just likes 2 climb, fly an cuddles up to 1 toy, she lived with a very playful budgie for over a year an never joined in, think some just enjoy life in different ways, just like humans

It isn't going to hurt for you to play with him with his toys. I mean ringing his bells and tapping them with your fingernail kind of thing. Obviously you are not going to be chewing his shredding toys but you can certainly help him know what the toys are for - put him on the ladder and encourage him up or even through it. Some leather strings with colourful beads, cat balls ...... these are other things some budgies like to play with. The balls are cheap and you can make up some beaded toys yourself quite cheaply, so nothing has to cost too much. Other than heaps of variety and colour and playing with him, I don't have a lot to offer you, I'm sorry.

It does sound as if it is the interaction which Brodie enjoys. Have you thought about whether a budgie friend for him is a possibility...?

I agree, some birds are just not playful. Hob has never played with anything, but Millie plays with any and everything. I think Birdguhl might be on to something - Brodie might LOVE a friend. Hob absolutely came alive when we got Millie and even though he still doesn't play she has encouraged him to try new things.

Thanks for all your comments, you lot really are a lovely bunch! I'm showing Brodie his toys, at the moment I'm focussing on his ball (the type you mentioned Hezz), rolling it about & ringing it & I have raided my beads & button stash so will get to work creating some things. As for getting another friend it's not something I've thought about much as my 2 previous budges were very happy souls on their own but it is something I'll bear in mind over the coming months.

He is loving the interaction with you, and that is great. As mentioned by a few others, some budgies don't play at all, so at least you and Brodie have gone further than that.

Daley didn't play with any of his toys for ages, but I just left them where they were and eventually he got brave and now he plays with most of them. Maybe it just takes him more time to investigate them.

Im trying all this with Mojo but she seems intent on biting my fingernails! or fingers...and hurts! Today every time i have tried to play with her she launches at me. yet if i roll a jingle ball she chases after it!
