At the risk of offering yet more unwanted advice (if so feel free to ignore I do as OP basically, I have a hand held vac which I use to take of the husk every day but leave the seed remaining until it's almost down to the bottom of the feeder (obviously if we're away for a day or two that changes) Otherwise, they might get too parky (that's Geordie for finicky) and only eat certain seed. When I give them millet treats, that's all they eat until it's completely finished and I'm sure that can't be nutritionally good for them, so they don't get them too often! Just noticed the last reply date, how you getting on now better I trust

Just noticed the last reply date, how you getting on now better I trust Any advice is appreciated Millie I ordered two of the silo feeder that had been suggested as they sounded perfect! The company I ordered from cancelled the order two weeks later saying they no longer stock them I bought these in the local pet shop.. www.google.co.uk/search?q=2+large+seed+fountains&client=safari&hl=en&source=lnms&tbm=isch&sa=X&ei=b7NTUqToLvH20gWs5IC4Cw&ved=0CAgQ_AUoAA&biw=320&bih=416&dpr=2#biv=i%7C0%3Bd%7CvtK-kF5neKEnhM%3AThey take up a lot of room inside the cage, they are very wobbly when the buds land on them so they're reluctant to use them and the husks still land in the tray. The only good part about them is Melman can't poop in them like he does with the coop cups! I use millet as a reward for my two now so they only get it from my hand. From not liking it at all a month ago, they can't get enough of it now! If I hung it in the cage they'd devour it in minutes.

samwiseg, how do you top up seed in these? I am guessing the feeder stays where it is & you open the top & pour fresh seed in? Is that right?? And to clean you would unscrew & take out the whole thing, inside & outside parts? I like the fact that they take up less inside cage space so that means more space for putting perches & toys. For anyone considering getting the insight clean seed silo bird feeder, it may not fit a Montana cage. I was trying to fit it to my san remo & just gave up in the end. The width of the bars caused problems & also the thickness of the bars themselves did not help. I also tried on the folding cage (vertical bars) & being fussy, wanted to put it across a section that had a horizontal bar & that was getting a bit fiddly. I gave up! I put it on the horizontal bars on the ferplast (piano 6) & it fitted like a dream. It's just a pity no one is actually living in there! Oh that's such a pity! It looks like it would fit most cages. What do you use instead if you dont mind me asking? As the two I got still aren't really suitable.

They are so deep though, so all are "built-up" so there is only a shallow amount of seed in them. I have a big box of unsuitable feeders, as well as an even bigger box of scary toys!

sweetpea I'm starting to collect my own box of unsuitable feeders now too! Such a waste of money Every toy is scary for Melman. If its not a perch or a coop cup then it's going to attack him. Then there's also a problem if you move a perch or coop cup. Suddenly they become scary too and he'll have to avoid them for a few days..just in case! My 6 year old niece was watching him a few days ago and just out of the blue she announced "I think you should change Melmans name to Sir Sissy Pants" lmao

No emoticon spamming for me as far as I know!
At least it was only Melman she insulted this time! She insulted a lady in the doctors surgery when she was about two and my poor sister in law cried with shame for days lol

People should know better than be insulted by a two-year old. Really. She wasn't being rude on purpose; just telling it as she saw it. A similar incident at my son's primary school - a teacher who had needed chemo, lost her hair and was back teaching. One of the grade 1's asked her where her hair was because "ladies all have hair" ........ she went home in tears. Methinks she wasn't mentally ready to go back to work.

I just use 5oz and 10oz stainless bolt-on coop cups, and I have white baking ramekins that also fit exactly in the attachments. I'm very "protestant" in my seed feeding. He gets around 3 teaspoons of fresh seed each day. I can't be bothered blowing off husks. It gets everywhere, on me and everywhere else. I just biff it all out and give him more each morning.
They aren't that deep and he's happy to dip his head in there to eat it. Sometimes he puts his head right in and makes noises to amuse himself as there's a bit of megaphone effect with the stainless ones.
He gets other stuff to eat during the day - a bit of porridge or boiled egg and toast, any bit of fruit I might be eating, a few bites of tomato, and whatever fresh veggies or greens I've got on any particular day, plus he often gets a stingy bit of millet.

Hezz, you're right, kids just say it like it is! Sometimes it's funny, other times you wish the ground would open up and swallow you!! There wasn't even anything noticeably wrong with this lady either.. My niece just asked rather loudly "what's wrong with that woman" then announced "coz she looks like a FREAK!" Nobody knew where she'd even heard the word freak, but she'd obviously heard it somewhere and decided to store it in her memory to use at the most in appropriate time

stace, I remember seeing a photo a while back of someone using ramekins in the coop cups (it was possibly yourself?) Brilliant idea! The coop cups seem to be the budgies first choice of dish so far. Melman perches on them though and poops all over the seed. They look so uncomfortable on his wee feet too Like you, I can't seem to blow the husks out cleanly. They just go everywhere! There's one coop cup in at the minute as Melman is still terrified of the new fountain feeders. Marge however, doesn't concern herself with what her food is served in

Try putting the coop cups down low, below the level of the any perches and, of course, not directly underneath. They probably won't feel the need to perch on them then but will just go down to feed.
