Thanks guys, I was upset when I realised, but this one wasn't my call. These little guys have raised chicks right outside our back door without a hint of being worried about us, so I had high hopes for this lot, being tucked in and near Mac. I thought the butcher birds were going to be the biggest threat .......

It seems that's what happened, Skysmum. I even said to my son Thursday morning as we left for school that I was concerned I hadn't seen them feeding the chicks, and we all know how much feeding newly hatcheds need.

The strange thing was Drew's comment was "I am sure they know what they are doing", and I agreed with him, which makes me think even more that something must have been wrong.

He is a very wise young man, the baby's could well have died before they left or the adults knew they were sick, who knows but im sure it was all for a reason. I once had a blackbird sitting on two beautiful baby's who were quite big, it was a couple of days before i noticed she wasn't around and the baby's were dead in the nest , we think a cat or fox took the mum .

What a shame! If you knew, it sounds like they could have made it with some help with feeding.

That is what bothered me most, i would willingly of finished raising them. Its a fine line between interfering too soon and it turning out to be too late .

Fascinating - such clever little birds. I love the little awning over the entrance! Have now finished reading the whole thread. Such a shame, sorry for your little loss. Perhaps they will lay again??

Maybe next year, Shirls. I doubt they will use the nest again, though. I may pull it and the rope down and reposition the rope for next year. I didn't see them for days, maybe a week afterwards, and that is very unusual.
