The amount of times I gave pretended to eat something, in front of Bailey but it does work after a few times. They are inquisitive little things and want to know what you are doing.

If your buds are interactive, and I am guessing they are, the idea of eating some of whatever it is you want them to eat works really well. Although the younger the better to get them eating their greens, the more in tune you and the birds are with each other the better results you will have with this. And as an extra to have on hand for poorly birds, Guardian Angel is highly recommended by all here who are able to purchase it. (I'm jealous as we are not allowed it in Australia ) It is not a cure-all, but more of an energy boost until the bird can be seen by a vet. Thanks everyone!
So this morning I tried to swap the location of their seed pot to the opposite end of the cage and fill the spare pot with grated and chopped veggies. Just before leaving for work, they flew down to have some breakfast, and were completely mystified, I actually think Lenny was 'tapping' on the empty side.... (the pots are double and one was full of veg, the other empty).
Because i'm so paranoid about Maggie being underweight - I swapped the pots back, so they knew where their seed was. I think i will swap locations of pots when I'm at home tonight and can keep an eye on them.
Thanks Hezz - I will look into that guardian angel - what a great website... you lovely people have so much knowledge and i'm very grateful for you all sharing!

They don't like change and when I first moved Bailey's cos he wouldnt use the pots that are inbuilt with the cage, I ended up putting seed in both the new and old, so he had somewhere.. do they come out? Bailey now eats his fruit and veg out of the cage..

Hi ffscool, Yes the pots come out, we have a Hagen vision cage, but they have a separate water pot as using the vision one was always mucky with feathers etc. You're right about change, they looked disgusted at me this morning But I got home, the veg hadn't been touched, so I mixed it into their seed, and this evening when we ate our dinner, they were munching away! I'm not sure how much they've eaten but they don't seem to have chucked much out into the cage. She had her meds this evening and I managed to weigh her too, she is 40 grams, which I think is 10 grams under weight? Need to weigh him tomorrow too! But she is playful this evening and back on her toy earlier which is a great sign! She hadn't been playing much lately either. We picked up our uv bulb today too, just need to get the lamp. So we're getting there

Thats Sounding promising! Especially if veg got eaten and she is playing. Hopefully she is well on the road to recovery
It will be interesting to know if the bulb helps too. Although I think I need it as much!

That all sounds good - esp getting in amongst that veg! Typical weight for a small budgie (as opposed to show type) is about 42-44g so it doesn't sound as if she is significantly underweight. But maybe she is a bigger type?

Yes! Otherwise it is the old budgie-in-a-box trick! It is good to know their weight when healthy so you can identify any significant weight loss.

Good thinking. Re knowing if they then lose any. And if course there is the age old question, does he gave heavy bones, if slightly portly....

I'm thinking 40gms is on the light side for a UK budgie. My Sparky is about as close to wild budgie size as you can get and weighs in around 44-46gms. Misty is a slightly bigger bird and weighs around the 50-55gm mark, so weight is hard to determine just on say so. I would listen to the vet; they have seen the bird, we are only guessing - as you can see there can be quite a discrepancy in weight for size. As birdguhl rightly points out it is a good practise to weigh them on a regular basis so you know you have an average range that each will hover around. I set my kitchen scales up with a piece of millet on it which usually works ....... not always though!

Well vet said underweight and turned Maggie upside down - her breast bone was prominent, he let us feel it, and so when we caught Lenny the other night, his breastbone was definitely not as prominent, but still going to weigh him tonight i think (I am sure much to his disgust too ! lol!) She looks skinnier as well now she is not fluffing up as much, she was so puffed up all the time, it was hard to see. But yes the fact she is playing already and the more chatting away and eating more is such an improvement. I hadn't realised how inactive they had become until we started to really think about it (thank god for You tube!). We had also put their inactiveness down to moulting . Am going to weigh her weekly just whilst trying to get weight back on. Yes good idea to weight them regularly to stop us being in the place we were 2 weeks ago. Ooooo toy set turned up from Yvonne today (the one where i make my own toys) i am looking forward to arts & crafts this evening! lol!
