I hope it's nothing serious & doesn't get any worse than that photo. Reunions are great.

Poor Hector. Sunlight and Vit D are supposed to be helpful with preening gland problems.

This is the pic. That looks very similar to, if not exactly the same as, Smudge's lump. You are lucky that it isn't impacting on the gland opening. We had Smudge's off once it started to displace her feathers as it continued to grow. For comparison, here's Smudge's: You can see in your pic, Marianne, where there are dried bits of oil that have gotten stuck to the lump. Smudge had this as well, so we know she was still getting some oil, before we had to interfere.

Hope Hector's lump doesn't get any bigger. Is there a chance that it will shrink? Keep us posted, Marianne. We are all thinking of you.

Did she recover well from the operation?[/quote] Marianne, Smudge is great. "Fat and happy' springs to mind! She lost quite a lot of her excess weight straight after the op, found lots of energy, but in short time, too short I feel, she did put it back on. She came through the op with more energy than she went in with, I feel. Vet says "no flying for at least a week, 10 days preferably" ........ Smudge escaped and flew the length of their area and back again less than 48hrs after!!!! It is about 10 metres each way, so not exactly a short flit! And things got more interesting after that, trying to contain her.

That's good Hezz. How did you stop her from picking at the stitches?

I can't remember that being an issue, to be honest, Marianne.

No, Marianne, I didn't ask for it. To be honest, cost would have been a factor.

Gotta say Hezz it will be for me too if it comes to it. Spent a fortune on the budgies this year in medical bills and cremations

I looked at it this way as well: knowing whether it is benign or malignant isn't really going to make any difference to how we treat her. The consensus from the experts was that it was unlikely to be malignant, but that it was better to remove it before it was too large and it may start to become invasive. Also with the wound, I didn't have to do anything as far as cleaning went; just kept an eye on it to make sure it didn't become infected. Oh, yes, and I do remember now discussing with the vet that if she did start to pick at the wound that we would have to fit her with an elizabethan collar! They have them on hand and would make one up to fit, so you shouldn't have any problem there, if Hector needs one.
