I am really worried. My husband travels all over the States and he came home with a man cold. He was just like the men in those commercials that become big babies. You really couldn't tell he is six foot two and a giant. After two days; here I am with the beginning of what I hope will not develop into what he had.
He did not go into my budgie room but I have no choice. I washed up before, held back a cough as I changed their water and food and exited quickly. I turned on my air filtration system in the living room. Can't leave it on long it does those ions that are bad for birds. Hopefully the germs won't make it in there. There is much vaccination going on around here and apparently the H1N1 is running around and some other cold too with another set of letters that apparently affects travelers. (if I am to believe the news)

No, I don't think they can. The virus does not transfer between species. We can howevr get bird flu because it has mutated to affect humans.

I hope you don't get it... the other week I had a bad cold, and I think you can be careful to an extent but as you say, you have to go in there and do stuff. In the years way back, I had colds and things and my budgie then, never caught them. Well, if he did, it came to nothing health wise for him

I can't believe it besides giving my husband pain killers and rubbing vicks on him I tried to stay away from him. He was coughing so much. This thing seems to be very virulent. Hopefully it's one of those hit and run things. It's kind of sad to feel like you have to wash up to the elbow after touching someone. He seemed to have the plague. Now he trudged off to work like this, very sad indeed. Good thing there is a vaccination campaign going on right now. My daughter said maybe just in case wear a mask in the bird room (pet dander). I do have some cotton kerchiefs, I will look like a bank robber lol. I can just imagine what the birds will make of this.

Spent a horrible night. I put the budgies to bed at 7 usually they sleep at 9 then went to bed. It's been 15 years since I had a noticeable immune response to anything. I kind of knew this thing was a bit worse because older people don't usually get fever. Took precautions and did not stay in the budgie room long this morning. It was only about 101 but felt like 104 did when I was a kid.

My trick for inhaling steam is with my tea. I have a black tea with peppermint and I added fresh ginger for the nausea. Yesturday the cats sneezed. I read on the internet that at least one cat has been diagnosed and died from H1N1 because it's swine flu. Two of them sneezed about an hour apart but since nothing.
They seemed to like to snuggle with me. Lol I bet they thought I was a big cat last night. Their body temperature is close to what mine was last night. It helped keep me warm.
I really appreciate the sympathy because I was there when my husband was at his worst but he is stuck 700 km from here right now. Have to hate the winter. Seems like I have licked the worst of it though. Now hopefully the buck stops with me and my babies will all be ok. Fingers crossed.

yes, fingers crossed.. horrible when on your own and feeling rough! also, if you can, try to gargle, even with salt water.. it does kill a lot of germs that go up and down in your throat. I use tea tree in water, or Olbas (if you have that, there) but salt will do

Olbas may not be everywhere, but I think Tea Tree will.. it is a natural antibacterial, taste is ok, obviously only a few drops in water.. but with even a cold, tea tree etc, will kill off the germs that you cannot help, that go down the back of the throat from the nose and make you cough, and also if you cough, they are back in your throat/mouth.
really helps

If it's that virulent then it will run its course very quickly. The more virulent something is the quicker it goes, usually, as often the most virulent are killers but those aren't too common. I remember my boyfriend getting a summer cold whilst he had Munchy when I was on holiday. I came back to find a face mask on his desk I'm not sure if humans can transmit bird flu to birds, but I would assume so because it is their illness and they can transmit it to us, but I should think a lot of that is media hype. Other than that, there are a few things we can catch from them but I doubt your husband has any of those from travelling really and I'm not sure if we can transmit them back. But purely human diseases cannot be transmitted to them. The infection would be unable to survive in a bird except in extremely rare cases. Wow, science has turned me into a doom and gloom merchant I doubt it will be a problem though.

Wow, science has turned me into a doom and gloom merchant I doubt it will be a problem though. The birds still look just fine. I'm still staying out of there though. I changed the water and put in the food was careful not to cough on it. I think your right about it passing quick because I think I burned it up last night. You're not doom and gloom at all, I find that it's quite positive to think this is just a hit and run thing. I don't want another night like last night. Wonder why the fever waits till we go to bed to hit? I did feel particularly tired last night and don't feel like that so I am sure you are right. The cats haven't sneezed either since yesterday. Could have been some fluke incident, I usually don't see them sneeze but maybe I'm not looking for it usually.

When I have a cold I always get someone else to blow the husks out and such, so I'm not breathing on it, which is how we got into the habit of my granddad blowing them out ^^
I always look for sneezing and such more when there're colds going around. It's almost like when someone is coughing once in a while when you're trying to sleep, and you keep waiting for the next one ^^
I'm not sure about the fever. Sadly I don't do a medical course, I've just had some modules on pathogens and such. It could be that you've been so busy all day that when you get into bed everything just relaxes and your body gives in?
