Wow what a difference, bless him . Just a note tanja, if he is supposed to be converting to pellets it would be best not to give him too much millet. Millet is very high in fat and if you are rationing his seeds that's why he is so keen to get to the millet and he will fill himself up on this.

Thank you ffiscool and skysmum, yeah I will keep the millet short only as treat for coming out of the cage. But I just found the perfect way to bring FinFin to eat his Harrison's pellets. I just mixed a few of them a little bit with water and pureed the whole thin. And guess what? FinFin adores that stuff, he munches into it like it is a completely new food! I put these pieces on top of his normal pellets and see where that goes. As soon he finishes the soaked pellets he may know the taste and will continue with the normal hard pellets. We'll see

Tried to read enough to catch up. I've been very sick myself. I am much better today.
Good thing he has the antibiotics, hopefully he will be feeling good soon. Take care little FinFin.

Skysmum beat me to it, regarding the millet. That is a lot of millet for one budgie, was what I thought when I saw the photos, tanja. I realize you are still learning about all this, so when you wish to give him millet, pull off one little bud, hold it for him, and he will become happy to eat this out of your hand. Used this way, it is a great training tool (makes one hell of a mess, though). It is great the way he has taken to the pellets - the joys of teaching a young bird. But don't forget his veggies as well, and grass if you can get any. The bigger the variety of foods he eats the better off he is going to be ....... just like ourselves.

Okay I am really not happy right now. Last night something very bad happened and I am still in shock how that could happen... everyday worked totally fine and I got the drop inside FinFin's mouth, but not the last evening... I did everything the same, like I did the days before and never failed. I hope FinFin can forgive me about that. Probably takes a while, because he is much more difficult to catch in his cage now, he must associate this happening with my hand... Even though when he is outside he is the most lovely bird, even with what happened, he stays with me and doesn't fly away. But also that is some kind of strange, because since when a bird does not fly away or tries to do something when he is outside? He always stays exactly where I put him down. He does not show the least of interest in moving around, exploring or playing with anything in his surroundings. But coming to the point, you wonder what happened? I tell you what happened. Last evening I caught FinFin in his cage and setup the syringe like every evening I hide it in front of him when he is inside the cage, so he doesn't get scared of my hand, when I reach for him. So Then he is moving a lot in the closed hand and I need to hold his head with Thumb and Pointer so he doesn't move his head away. I put the syringe on the side of his beak and he opened it, I was sure to put the drop exactly in that moment, but then something terrible happened. He moved his head to the side somehow in the moment of the drop leaving the syringe and instead of his mouth the drop went completely into his left eye... I was in SHOCK to see his whole eye covered in a yellow substance. OMG OMG what to do??? I tried to hold him he did not move away, he knew I wanted to help him, but he moved his head. I tried to get the drop off his eye. then after a few seconds of this the drop was on my finger, but there was still something on his upper eyelid and it seemed he couldn't close his eye correctly. man I was in tears... I brought him to the bathroom but he is afraid of the running water... So I tried carefully to put away the rest of the antibiotics. after a few more seconds I brought him back to his cage and when he was inside there he must have recovered, because suddenly his eyelid could close again... Damn he seems okay this day and still can see... But I tell you this was terrible

That sounds pretty traumatizing. It must be really hard to get medications into such a small animal. Frankly I really don't think I could do as well as you. Poor FinFin it's hard being sick and not being able to understand things are being done for your welfare. Stay strong FinFin is counting on you.

I'm so sorry to hear this, tanja, but I can totally understand how easily this could have happened. It is SO difficult getting a tiny drop in the right tiny place. I have done it (badly) many times and worried about meds in eyes, meds over nares, too much meds (as the difficulty of getting it in the right place the first time means having to overload the pipette) and all the rest. Apart from terrorising them, I have also caused Luee a broken blood feather in the course of chasing him down. I really hope you can forgive yourself. It sounds as if FinFin is alright. We are not vets, just doing our best for our buds. x

You will feel bad, BUT Finfin will be ok about you, honestly. We have all done things and the buds are ok. It's us that feels awful. If you try tonight without success, would he drink from a spoon, so the drop of meds would be got that way?

Thank you guys, I will try it this evening with a spoon and see if he would drink it from there. We'll see. i am sure he will be okay and it doesn't affect his feelings. But still it is terrifying when you see a drop totally covering the whole eye... you feel like you are unable to help :-( But gladly he got it out of the eye completely... I am very glad that this medicine does not burn into skin etc... Like acid... That would be fatal!
