What a beautiful healthy chick, Dilly is. How old is she now? She hatched on 4th, so do the math

She loves cheek rubbing. She is so far ahead of her age and preens her feathers even when there are hardly any. So this feather cleaning, preening and cheek rubbing becomes a bonding thing. They don't get just food from the mums in the nest box Thank you for the explanation, BB. I felt there must have been something like that involved. Always a pleasure, Hezz

Have to say, I just love this photo. Regarding the video: Isn't she amazing trying to preen herself already! One little prima donna there for sure. Lovely to see her fluffy little downy feathers and holding her head up ..... to a certain extent. A prima donna for sure The only chick which is fussy about everything, but not about cleaning with hot water dripping cotton pad. You can guess why, since all chicks hate water in this age and even later.

You can really see how feathers evolved from reptilian scales in these baby birds when they are all just spiky keratin sheaths. It's amazing Stace I was thinking the other day that this much pinnies couldn't be painful like molts. Otherwise these chicks would be in severe discomfort.

She is growing at a tremendous rate now. She no longer fits in the palm of your hand. I also love the way she is preening herself. The squeaks are getting louder too if that was her. Yes she is, OP Soon she would stop gaining weight. It is when body growth stops and feathers growth picks up. That is Lovie in the background. She still just peeps.
