For those of you who are interested, here are my two pairs and their respective chicks. Older pair Yellow face type 2 (I think) dominant pied sky blue male Blue opaline female Younger pair Recessive pied blue male Light green opaline female Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk Beautiful pairs and nice pictures, Matt. Good news with the feeding as well. I kind of knew it will be fine this time Your comment about the interest in budgie pairs and their offspring, cracked me a little. Those who are not interested, what would they be doing in a budgie forum I know you are being nice. We all love budgie pictures and everything about them

Many years ago I bred two pairs of budgies. The first pair were excellent parents, the second pair didn't have a clue. The second pairs first and only clutch of babies they had were dying one by one till the last baby was left, I tried to keep it warm and then i put it in with the first parents who brought it up with their babies, it was a beauty. You did well there Sully. I tried doing that in January when my older hen didn't feed any of the chicks and there were screaming for food. I didn't have any success. Gorgeous birdies there, Matt. I hope you have success with your remaining eggs. Thanks Hezz. Three more due to hatch with the younger female due tomorrow morning. Beautiful pairs and nice pictures, Matt. Good news with the feeding as well. I kind of knew it will be fine this time Your comment about the interest in budgie pairs and their offspring, cracked me a little. Those who are not interested, what would they be doing in a budgie forum I know you are being nice. We all love budgie pictures and everything about them Haha, didn't even think about that BB! What an idiot!! I think the older hen must be a slow learner...I've just fostered her chick over to the younger hen after seeing the size difference between the two chicks. Although the older hen is feeding I don't think she is enough. Despite her chick being a day older, it is at least a third smaller than the other chick. She accepted it straight away but I'll check in a bit to see if she is feeding it. I'm quite confident. Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk

That sounds like the best move and how reassuring to see the second hen take it on straight away. Hope this continues.

Just checking here, bigger size budgies have bigger chicks and vice versa.

That sounds like the best move and how reassuring to see the second hen take it on straight away. Hope this continues. Unfortunately it didn't. She was feeding the chick alright but this morning it seemed very weak and had died by the time I got home from work. I don't think it was the hen not feeding....the chick had food in its crop. Who knows... Just checking here, bigger size budgies have bigger chicks and vice versa. And yes, totally get what you mean BB. It was just that there is very little difference in size of my birds and it had barely grown at all since hatching. I had a question for both of you actually as I was expecting another chick this morning but over the past couple of days some of the remaining eggs have gone off-colour. I'll post before and after pictures below. Could this be a dead-in-shell or addled egg situation? Before (Tuesday) After (Today) Many thanks, Matt Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk

Pictures are with and without flash, so can't say anything. But eggs don't necessarily hatch every other day or so. I have had gaps of 5 days or so. Just try to keep the interference in the nest box to minimum level possible.

I am no breeder, Matt, but would go on BB's advice. It's usually spot-on.

Here's the latest photo veryone. Second chick hatched today 6 days after the first, rendering the other eggs unviable. Leaving them well alone for now but all looking good And yes, I'll replace the concave if it gets much worse Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk

Unfortunately the little one didn't survive. Not really sure what happened there as it was being fed plenty of food. Could be the colony-breeding circumstances or the fact the mother is young. But the older chick is doing very well. Here is a picture from this morning. Looks like I should be expecting an opaline (White down). But that could also mean that the cock she has paired with is not the father (the recessive pied cock would have to be split for opaline). Time will tell I guess. The other males have quite distinctive mutations so I should be able to work it out through process of elimination.

Sorry to hear of another set-back. Here's hoping this one makes it.
