Hi. I'm ordering guardian angel and ivermectin from the bird care co website for my budgie first aid kit. Do I need to buy Aviclens for their drinking water or calcivite or daily essentials? (they have permanent access to a cuttlefish and iodine block)
im im have two 4 month old boy budgies who live indoors with me.
Thanks for for any advice in advance.

I don't know why you would need to buy Aviclens. If you are worried about your water containing gremlins, why not just use boiled or filtered water instead. I presume you are changing it every day or more regularly if needed? As for the other two, that is a personal choice and a lot would depend on the birds' diets, access to a wide range of vitamins and minerals which is necessary for optimum health. It is not a bad idea to give these to them on a regular basis ........ I don't think there is any harm to be done by supplementing their diet in this way, added once a week. Given too often they could get a toxic build-up but mostly I would assume that any more than they need would simply be excreted, as happens to ourselves. They certainly aren't going to be breeding so definitely are not going to be needing these on a daily basis. My opinion, only, of course.

Good questions to ask! In my experience JennyB, budgies that are breeding would need calcivet as they would need that for shell production and daily essentials again is for breeding or perhaps budgies that don't have fresh veg. Would advise as your birds are young, to try and get them to eat veggies like carrot, basil, sweetcorn and apple as for birds to have fresh natural foods is better than supplementing. Check out our fresh foods section here and for any recipe ideas click here

Oh so it is jellybean! Apologies for that, there are some things that are not there anymore, I keep forgetting how long I have been a member here! LOL! Only other thread that might be useful is this one which is great for when birds are in moult. Thanks for letting me know, perhaps Marianne Marlow can remove or update the old recipe thread?

You can cover this through fruits, vegetables, egg shells, etc. If you really want to, go for their new product, Easy Bird Complete Pet. I haven't used it but the description looks good. A word of experience, save money.

Thanks for the replies. I have noted down the fresh foods and egg food recipe. Their favourite is carrot so far they like to shred it but haven't progressed to realising it's food

You may be surprised at what they are getting, but the best thing is they are not ignoring it.
