I just got back today from a lengthy stay with my sick mother overseas. I left my boys with a dear friend whom I trust. (She feels terrible right now) Being a worst case scenario ready person, I left her with detailed instructions for my boys, my vet info and emergency cash. When I went to pick up my little guys, Bo looked horrible! Like he was drenched in oil and overall bad. Sitting in a corner of the cage not moving a lot. My friend told me not to worry, that Bo was panting about 2 weeks ago and that she treated him with VetRX (For Poultry!!!!) and his breathing is now all better! He was just greasy from the oily VetRX! (I guess treatment involves rubbing the oil under the wings at night, and dripping it water diluted onto the cere and into the mouth. Basicly it is like Vapor Rub for animals) As soon as I got home I gave Bo a warm bath. Hoping to get some of that oil off of him. Chunks of some crusty, yellow substance came off his face and other parts of his body! His neck, his back, under his wings! A big piece came off from under his beak and the sides, but there is still more left. I can not take him to the Vet today, they are all closed, because of the snow storm that is going on. I am VERY PANICKED right now!!! What is going on with my Bo??? Did she burn his skin with the VetRX?? Are those scabs, or is he seriously ill? His 4 buddies are doing fine and are as active and happy as usual! He is still wet in this picture, but he looked just like this from the VetRX!

Oh dear poor little chap, ive not heard of vetrx before but have googled and it appears to be safe for budgies and can only assume the nastie build up around him is that. How is his breathing now. I would keep him very warm at the moment until his feathers have dried out, even if they are greasy this can make them chilled. I can only suggest that if he still seems poorly to get him to the vet tomorrow.

I am so worried! His breathing is fine, but he is so drained. Just sitting around. I have him in his own little hospital cage right now, close to the fireplace. He can still see his friends about 4 feet away from him. This stuff seems to be like a shell on parts of his body! Especially around his beak and neck. The guys just recently had spiky heads and a little molt. All his feathers are stuck in this and when it loosens, the feathers come out with it! My friend has chickens. That is why she used the VetRX for poultry. I am worried it is was too strong for his skin. If the weather keeps up here, I wont be able to get to a Vet for another two days.

Is he eating and drinking. It certainly seems like she has over done it. Until you can get to a vet give him another bath tomorrow. If you have any camomile tea make him some and put it in his water drinker and i would put some in his warm bath too, it will calm him and sooth his skin.

He is drinking and eating. So far he had some of his normal seed mix and some kale. I think he is drinking more than usual. I will prepare him some chamomile tea asap and keep my fingers crossed that the roads will be cleared by tomorrow! Thanks for the help!!! I will keep him in his own cage for now. He looks like he needs rest away from the others rampaging around.

I don't know anything about VetRx, but I would say that that bird looks extraordinarily ill, and I wonder if she is being accurate in her telling you what the heck she did to him. It looks like his skin is falling off around his beak and the area around his eye looks recessed as if he is extremely dehydrated or something. I wish I could be reassuring, but wow, that looks terrible. I will be sending good thoughts your way!

Okay, since you are asking for urgent responses, I'll give you what I found quickly instead of researching for hours to make sure I am right. I read that that VetRx is camphor, and camphor is toxic to budgies. I will keep reading, but I urge you to direct your research in this direction. "VetRx Poultry Remedy is based on a natural formula that has been in use since 1874, and is to be used as an aid in treating respiratory problems in all varieties of poultry. Its ingredients include Canada Balsam, Camphor, Oil of Origanum, Oil of Rosemary and more." HAMILTON & DISTRICT BUDGERIGAR SOCIETY INC. AVIAN POISONING 4.3 Camphor Present in topical liniments and rubs. Toxicity: Stimulates central nervous system (CNS) to cause seizures. Toxic from all routes of absorption. A budgie developed seizures as a result of skin absorption, vapour inhalation and ingestion when the owner handled it after using Campho-phenique without washing his hands.

That is awful! I had no idea about camphor being toxic! They even sell VetRX specifically for caged birds and it says that is ok to use on Parakeets!?!?! I never had this stuff in my house, so I do not know much about it. (I am more the "Just go to the Vet" kind of person and don't administer any medication that has not been prescribed) This is crushing me! The streets are still not plowed, it is still heavily snowing, I can't even get out of my driveway!!! Poor Bo has to be in pain/shock/I don't know and there is nothing I can do about it till this storm has past. I will keep him hydrated (he has access to tea and water)he is drinking, do the camomile tea baths and make sure he rests. I did add some vitamins to his feed and he has fresh food and fruit/veggies.

Poor little Bo. You are doing absolutely everything you can to make him comfortable until you can get out to the vet. My very best thoughts and prayers for you and Bo. Keep us posted.

Do you have anything like Rescue Remedy?? This can help both with the stress and give their immune system a little boost. Better still is Guardian Angel, which you can get in the States. If you have it, give it to him, if you don't, order it anyway. I really don't know what else you can use to relieve his skin over such a large area.

Barrie once said he uses Savlon on his birds. He uses the spray form and I used the cream on Munchy once. Don't know how much it you help, though.
