Smudge had been doing well, putting on weight steadily and then stable at 45gms, but I had noticed towards the end of last week that she was having trouble each morning, as though the anti-inflammatories were not seeing her through until time for the next dose. Then Saturday. Saturday was not a good day. She didn't eat for most of the day, I feel didn't get a full dose of meds into her first thing, but I did manage a bit more by adding a drop to a smear of vegemite, which she can't resist. I was fearing the worst again but late afternoon she seemed to pull herself out of the doldrums and had a big feed on some fresh local millet. Sunday started out much the same but she began eating around midmorning and was happy enough chirping away in between the efforts of trying to poop. Yesterday, Monday, was ugly. And I had to be out almost all day. Poor girl was almost turning herself inside out but very little was coming out; very distressed and ill-looking, and again I was fearful that that time had come. I couldn't see how we could go forward if she wasn't able to get rid of her waste. So I was very reluctant to take the covers off this morning, but found her looking much better, brighter and actually able to poo! I have seen her do a few today with almost no effort. And interested in food - grass and seed, which I hadn't seen her go to for a couple of days. So, so far today is a good day, but who knows what tomorrow will be like. I really am taking this all very much one day at a time.

Sweet little girl. I hope each day is better, or at least not worse. Such a trying time for you both.

That is a very stressful situation. No doubt Smudge will just carry on, but for you not knowing what the next day brings. Best wishes for you both.

Yesterday was a good day, thank all Gods involved. She ate, she drank, she pooped, she chirped and fly about as if there was no issue. Her breathing is still quite laboured, but she doesn't seem to find flying too much effort. Today seems to be going the same way, so far. So pleased that she is feeling well enough to get into mischief with my insect screens, which can't be any good for her. Mango is still trying to kick her out of the flock, though, when she isn't too busy chewing up my perch pile. When Mango gets started, one or the other goes into the big cage. Makes it a bit easier for me to give Smudge the good stuff as well. Oats are back on her menu, and this millet-y sort of grass that the council have used to seed the railway line bank has been a god-send. She much prefers it to commercial millet sprays. We also have PPC, not only sweetpea's B. She has started to use her tongue to stop me getting the syringe further into her mouth. I have wondered if using a crop needle might help; not to deliver it right into her crop - I would need lessons on that - but just to get past that damn tongue.

The good thing about having PPC is that they can't be too ill as it does require some energy. I do have to applaud her for the ingenious tongue trick. Bezukhov has not used that (yet) & I am NOT letting him read this! His last used tricks were the beak-clamped-shut followed by the roll-into-a-ball. You're doing great, Smudge.... & Hezz too.

Give him time, sweetpea. I am sure he will work it out. Or maybe it is that stubborn hen thing coming to the fore again.
