What I have had to do to give meds is put a plaster on the end of my finger, they bite it, I stick the meds in.

Well last night's dose when almost like a charm. You just can't pick it! I may have lucked onto a solution, by stretching her neck up gently, the way they do to crop feed, I wasn't actually trying anything at the time, more getting a firmer grip of the squiggly madam, but by doing this she protested rather vocally and in went the syringe! It seemed to be a reflex action with her, so here's hoping for similar results tonight ......... I'll believe that when I see it. I rang the vet surgery yesterday to get some feedback, maybe tips or tricks they might have, but got no further than the receptionist, who promised me she would get someone to call back (never did). She doesn't fit the practice, that woman; she doesn't have the right attitude, in fact is almost obstructive, rather than constructive, and then made a throwaway remark when I told her what I wanted, and it was to do with Smudge ......... "oh, Smudge is still going, is she?" How bloody rude was that! It made me angry, but that could have been very hurtful to someone else.

(sorry if im not allowed to say that admin feel free to edit!: Edited rant over, so good to hear Smudge is doing well!! fab Hezz and may it continue

So, I am now doing one full-on dosing by syringe each night, and in the morning putting her dose onto a tiny bit of our home-grown millet that she loves, leaving it a hour or two and giving this to her before I give her a spray of the millet. At least this way she gets a small amount in the morning, and I can keep watch to make sure she doesn't regress. I am loath to drop her down to only one dose in case we end up where we were before, but I also don't want to be dosing her up to the eye-balls if we can get away with less ....... where is my crystal ball? ? Long-term meloxicam use can cause some of the things we are trying to avoid ........ nothing is simple, is it??

Remind me (possibly us all) how long does Smudge have to have this medication? Is there to be another vet check-up? You are both doing fantastically well, must be shredding your nerves Hezz! Keep it up Smudge and do what mummy says!

As long as things are going forwards and not back, it sounds positive. It's horrible having to medicate them for that long. Is she still okay with you handling her, even though you're stuffing syringes down her beak?

She is really good about the whole thing, aside from the beak-clamp, the head turning, and the fact that she no longer nicely steps into my hand. I have to pluck her off the perch, unfortunately, but she has not gotten aggressive with me when it is all going down. She got me a beauty this morning while she and Mango were having a beak-fight through the bars of the cage, so did Mango, twice! I suppose I can't call it a cat-fight between budgies ....... a hen-fight will have to do.

Keep it up Smudge and do what mummy says! Sorry, Shirls, I didn't answer your questions. How long? Possibly for however long she lives. Another vet check? Not sure. The thing is no one really expected her to make it this far. The other thing is that they don't really know what is going on. With the urgency of her problems and how sick she became, it was more a case of keeping her alive, than being able to diagnose her problems. And I didn't feel there was anything to be gained by putting her through more tests when she was so touch-and-go. Now that she is stronger but knowing how quickly she has gone down-hill previously, I am loathe to cut the meds down too drastically; she is doing so well, but I am aware that we may simply be prolonging rather than curing. I am trying to oh so gradually drop her dosing down, so that I can gauge if she does start to struggle, and bump things up if needed. Keep your fingers crossed for a goodly life-span to come.
