Poor Luee... I hope he feels better soon. Very good that he has managed a little canoodle though - how devoted he is to little Berry.

Again, thanks for all your good wishes! This forum is great... So, I am just back from the vet. I say 'I' because Luee didn't come home with me... HIe is having a night in hospital. Jenna, the vet I saw the first time I went up there with Berry, looked at him and pronounced him to be in good general condition, with good heart sounds and nothing sounding too awful with his breathing. (He has a history of resp problems.) However, he was panting with his beak open after the stress of the examination, which she felt was a more pronounced reaction than should occur. This together with his abnormal droppings and diminished appetite and activity level meant that she needed some fresh droppings for analysis and she also wanted to give him some oxygen. There was nothing abnormal otherwise on examining him. No nasty lumps for example, which was good. She is querying respiratory issue which has affected his gut, or gut issue which is having a knock-on effect on his breathing. If there is something gut-related they will all need to be treated, but this will be near to impossible with Woody and Charlie as they are now never shut into a cage and please themselves where they spend time. (This has been the case since last year's mouse nightmare when they got spooked about sleeping shut in to the lower small cage.) Poor Luee was quite stressed by the journey, I could hear him flapping around and he might have been on the floor for part of it. But he was a very good boy for Jenna and didn't peck her. He did hang onto her finger very strongly though - a trick he has learned during previous episodes - if I've got your finger, you can't do anything else to me with it! She said I could have taken Berry in with him since they are such a close couple. I wish I had now as it will stress them both to be apart. I thought they wouldn't have welcomed Berry as he is shedding virus particles continuously. I might take him up there later in the day if it is confirmed he will be there overnight. He will be much happier to have his friend with him. I'll get some news later today. The other event of the day - which is NOT good - is that I saw a mouse in the bathroom. It has been ages... So another campaign will need to be waged!

Thanks, all.
Had a call a little earlier from a 4th vet student. She said he is no worse, but no better. He has been getting oxygen but his breathing is still laboured. He hasn't eaten by himself but has had a few crop feeds. His droppings tested negative for parasites. Jenna noted she thinks it is primarily a respiratory issue with the other symptoms as secondary. He has been started on antibiotics.
When I asked about taking Berry up there too, she had to ask another vet as Jenna had left. Predictably the other vet, who doesn't know these lovey dovies, said best not. I am thinking they will want to keep him longer so apart from the worry and upset for the others (esp Berry), I will have to brace myself for a big bill...
This all impacts on something else which is going on in my life. I was going to start another thread about this, but don't really feel like it now. It is that I have recently made a big change in my life (now just remembered I mentioned this elsewhere and didn't respond to a follow-up post about it - sorry, whoever that was...).
The change is that I decided to give up my job (with very mixed feelings but def the right way ahead), move and start out a kind of new 'portfolio' life doing a greater variety of things and also eventually get back to my PhD which I have had to let go as it was too much on top of everything else. I was planning to have moved by now (to a friend's flat which is empty at the moment) and then decide what to do with this place (rent / sell). All quite big stuff.
This would seem mad to non-birdie people, but the date of the move actually depends on the birds in that I need to get both Woody and Charlie in a cage at the same time and get near enough to shut the door on them so that I can get them to the new place first as they would be extra-spooked if I took Luee and Berry first. For the last week or so I have been putting their meals into the small cage their pellets are in, and the one they used to sleep in. I have been trying to get them more relaxed about spending time in there and not making a hasty exit when I go anywhere near the cage. They used to go in there every night like good little boys and get tucked in but since the mice episode they don't want to be there and if I even get up off the sofa, which is a good 10 feet away, while they are in there they get ready to hop out.
This is going to delay things considerably as that cage is at the vet's now with my little (big) Lemon Sweetie in it...
The expense is not very welcome at a time when there is a 'hiatus' in my income...
The appearance of a mouse this morning was also not welcome. Hey ho...

It's a shame they won't let you take Berry along tonight. I hope they don't miss each other too much. I hope that Luee responds well to his treatment too. Good luck with all the changes and I hope you can get back to your PhD. It's a while since I finished mine and although it was stressful at times it was very rewarding getting it done. It's tricky that Woody and Charlie don't want to be caged. I don't know what happened with the mouse episode. Did one get into their cage? I hope you manage to round the boys up some how

Thanks, Dr Criswell! What subject was your PhD? The mice episode was last year. I had mice in Luee and Berry's cage, but not to my knowledge in Woody and Charlie's. In retrospect the first indication that something was up was when W & C started to refuse to go into their cage as usual at night. I couldn't understand why. Then one evening I was in the sitting room and I heard a noise. I always look over to see who is making any distinct noise, and I immediately saw none of them were. Then when I went over the cages, I saw a little bump moving around under the paper. It was like something from Tom & Jerry! Luee and Berry were all thin and alarmed and looking down to the side in the funny way they do. I could almost hear them saying "WHAT is that? Get it OUT of here!" That was the start of a long and tiring campaign involving all sorts of modifications to the set up to prevent them getting back in, and a full gamut of anti-mice devices and substances. I eventually got there. But from this morning, here we go again...
