I think that is out of order.. as you say, not like anything they are doing has helped
it is good he hasn't lost weight though..
am sure there is something you can do re megabacteria.. how can it not be cured? someone on here will know
is this an avian vet? could you go elsewhere?
it is so hard, poor Bertie... is he ok in between being sick, as in playing etc?

Our regular vet is more cats/dogs/rabbit so we sought out an avian vet and hour away from where we live and that is where we have been going.
Bertie does 4 things: Sleeps / Vomits / Sits fluffed up / Eats
He really isn't well. I understand the vet is limited to what they can do if I don't have the money to do all the expensive tests. We'd not wanted to go down the blood/xray route as he is old, but honestly now, it wouldn't be an option even if we did as my husband's wage is covering the mortgage/house bills - there is no surplus money for emergencies like this.
Argh - just needed to vent, am is a horrid mood now. Feel worse than I did before i went. I did get the diet change though and hopefully the egg / potato will be easier on him.

I do feel for you. He has had it a long time, so something must be sustaining him. Hopefully as you say the egg and potato will help. YOu can also give pasta and rice (no salt anywhere). Such a shame but you are doing all you can.
Are you continuing with the ronivet?
I looked at insurance for Bailey but not many companies do it.. and think it wasn't that cheap, but in hindsight it might have been, as Bailey has also been to the vet a lot.

No I stopped the ronivet and put him back on the last antibiotic the vet prescribed. He was good for 4 days on ronivet but day 5 he was the most sick I've ever seen him - projectile vomiting - loads of it. I thought it was it for him that day.
I've 23 budgies so they due to the cost they are not insured.

Personally I think your vet was out of order to have a go at you. Like you said, you are only trying to help Bertie.
Doesn't sound like they have much of an idea of what is wrong with him.
I am not sure what to suggest. I wish I had a magic wand to make him well.
So, he sits fluffed up, sleeps, eats and vomits. But he's not lost any weight?
With megabacteria, he would be losing weight and slowly starving.

My worry was he was starving to death, but apparently his weight is ok.
Let's see how he gets on with egg and potato.
I'm not going back to the vet with any budgies. She did apologise for getting excited and said it was just because it was obtainablein the UK. Told her hubby bought it on amazon!

As samwiseg mentioned on another thread, for megabacteria you can use Apple Cider vinegar in the water. 5-10mls of ACV per litre of water. It will not do Bertie any harm to try it. Obviously not in the same water as antibiotics.

Does it need to be the one that says the mother or something.

Does it need to be the one that says the mother or something. The article that I read did not specify that.. hmm.. What is the mother?

As samwiseg mentioned on another thread, for megabacteria you can use Apple Cider vinegar in the water. 5-10mls of ACV per litre of water. It will not do Bertie any harm to try it. Obviously not in the same water as antibiotics. For info: Tricho Megabacteria or Avian Gastric Yeast A chronic form has also been described in which the bird loses weight despite eating. The course of the disease waxes and wanes but ultimately leads to death. These birds often are ruffled, regurgitate and pass undigested food in their faeces. Diagnosis in a live bird may be difficult as the megabacteria are not always shed in the faeces. If present they can be identified by microscopic exam of fresh faeces. Failure to find the organism does not rule out infection - since shedding only takes place at certain stages of the disease and may be intermittently shed. Bloods may show anemia and a low total protein. Barium studies may reveal a dilation of the proventriculus and a constriction of barium at the isthmus. Autopsy of birds that have died from megabacteria demonstrate an emaciated bird with an empty crop. The proventriculus may be distended with seeds and a white mucoid secretion often is found lining the proventriculus. Ulcers and hemorrhage are frequently found in the proventriculus and the isthmus. Treatment may or may not be successful. Many antimicrobials do not work. The highest degree of success has been achieved by employing an antifungal known as amphoteracin B orally. Lowering the ph (or making the stomach more acid) by administering vinegar and Lactobacillus also appears advantageous since the organism thrives in a higher ph (basic) envrionment. I hope this helps

Bles you all!
Yes I do recall us talking about the mother, I was going to get some - can't even remember why I ended up not doing. Will get some today.
Bertie has been eating his egg, although isn't impressed with the potato. Still, glad he is eating even if he is ruffled and fluffed up

The ACV does not need to contain 'the mother' to be of help ...... in fact the whole point of containing the mother has not been proven to be the helpful ingredient. Normal organic ACV will still do the trick; it is lowering the pH of the crop that is the crucial part and that is where the ACV comes in .... it keeps the crop acidic so that the dangerous bugs don't get a hold on.
