Flying is obviously not a natural act for poor Edward.

My problem is that I have no idea what her previous life was like. It appears that budgieed has now gone to live in her homeland. She is such a friendly character and interacts with me whenever I call her name or go to the cage. She chases the boys at times and if I approach with the finger and she doesn't want she will bite. She doesn't bite hard now but lets me know to leave her be. Now when she comes to fly she makes a different sound to the boys. Whiskers sounds different to Joey, but both of them make quite a noise with their wings, Edward is far more softer. I have not been able to observe her flying a great deal as she usually takes me by surprise and I don't see her in flight. The times I have seen her she is the landing posture all the time. Now when I have seen Joey fly his head is sort of scanning the room and the tail is usually floating behind him until he wants to land, then the tail drops and he sort of floats down to the perch. He is not the strongest flier and twice round the room and he is flagging. Edward doesn't seem to flag, she doesn't seem to aim very well. She can gain height but miss judges the height she needs to be. Like if she is aiming for the top of the cage she will be a couple of inches too low. Now Whiskers is a very confident flier, super fast and maneuverable. Totally different. Apart from the blood vessel that expands when Edward flies there doesn't seem to be much wrong. Her covert feathers are tatty and all over the place. Could this be why she is unable to change direction maybe?

Edward is a real lady. She knows her own mind. Hopefully the blood vessel will straighten itself out. Op, I love how you write about your budgies. Each one is a character.

They are indeed a living breathing character. As I'm sure everyone's budgies are to them.

Maybe if he feathers are not streamlined, it does alter things.

Yes I understand what you are saying there. I haven't been able to see the covert feathers in operation yet and it seems they use them to steer with, well Whiskers does. I've not been able to study Joey yet and he is a much bigger bird, yet he can manoeuvre much better than Edward. When Edward is at rest her flight feathers are not in line and nicely folded, but when she flies they are aligned. I must get to watch her in flight to see what is happening, but it is a wait and wait and then miss the action. I will have a go at making the action happen when I want it to. Gently of course.

It will be interesting. It's good you have 3 to observe, as might give you a better insight

That looks just like Edwards feathers. JoJo does fly alright though doesn't she?

My jojo is completely flightless.

And there lies the difference then. Maybe Edward shouldn't fly, she just doesn't know it.

Thing is that apart from jojos tail coverts, her feathers are fine. The vet says there's no reason she can't fly.

Has she always been like that, I mean not attempting to fly?

The whole time we have had her yes. About two years. She was seven when we got her, I think.
