I've never had much success with growing seeds of any description in water, rinsing them often etc., the chickens didn't take to them (wheat), nor the buds (the millet). I shall grow the millet in soil, haven't got round to it yet, but will do soon.

As long as there are no pesticides and stuff on the seeds then why not plant them straight into moistened soil, compost or whatever medium they will be growing in. There's nowt wrong with a bit of muck. Good luck Shirls .

When I grew mine in the small pots and harvested the grass the buds were not very keen. There was only Joey and Whiskers then. But when I grew some in the large trough like tub the boys went for it without me harvesting any. They seemed to like it fresh. I never washed or rinsed any of the seeds as they were what fell off some shop bought millet. That was always clean as the stall holder packed his own. I never had any millet fail. I was surprised how easy it was to grow. I must say it took a while and lots of sunshine to get to the millet heads stage. That went in a breath when the buds saw it. That's all very well OP but I just know if I encourage my lot to eat it straight from the pot they will think all my plant pots with plants indoors are for eating!

True, samwiseg ... made me think of my naughty Cagney (RIP): onesweetiepea.wordpress.com/2011/06/13/poor-spider-plant/BTW, I have got on the bandwagon too & yesterday planted some millet seeds.

Shirls, you have a grand place for a few sprinkles of millet, now. In behind your lattice fence with the other plants being nurtured. PS I have sorghum growing through one of the concrete cuts in the driveway. That's from the "chooks'" food.

O.K. I've come on here and been reminded. Millet seeds are in compost, on the window sill. Watch this space!!

Yours are growing well Sam even if they do look a bit lonely.

Sam, they might need a bit more sun, if that is possible. Might just be the angle of the photo but they look a bit leggy.

They are in the sunniest spot I can find and I'm trying the best I can! Perhaps I should pot them on? And I planted the seeds that way as I took on OP advice as I didn't want them to go pot bound! Oh the trials and tribulations of being a gardener

Mine are not even outside, they are on the kitchen windowsill, So they're not even getting "real" sun as it's filtered through the window.

Maybe I should have said "more light" rather than "more sun" ..... I did say "if possible", in my defence. You can only do what you can. Good luck, everybody!!
