I left the room briefly this morning and this sight is what greeted me when I returned! Prison gym session for Brown Jenkin Prison break in progress: Useless prison guard! Mr Hibs loves my phone so much he used to try to feed it

Ha ha. I was wondering how that fence would contain Brown Jenkin when I saw your photos yesterday.

I've been trialling a passive weighing strategy for my flock as I have a couple of nervous nellies plus a chocobo who considers me tame but won't reciprocate. Oh, she's friendly enough but it's all on her terms. Yesterday I captured Chocobo's weight for the first time in a while, a healthy 59g. Today I did even better - Squeak , a good 32g (he's in the foreground of the picture) and Mr Hibs, an astonishing 51g. 51g? He doesn't look overweight, in fact he looks the healthiest he's ever been, excellent flying and running-around routines and of all the budgies, the most on-the-go. Patch, in the background of the pic, was a near-miss. He avoided registering his weight by the simple expedience of yanking the millet off of the weighing-plate. The boy will go far with that kind of deviousness. I cannot wait to register Eeyore's weight - my guess, a couple of kilograms (I kid ) I recognise how vital it is to keep track of everyone's weight - any early-warning system is a good system for birds - but I hate the trauma associated with forcing the little lovelies into boxes for weigh-ins. Yes, I am far too soft-hearted for budgie ownership, you aren't the first to be thinking that! Addendum: Aargh, Patch is on the weigh plate as I type but the scales are electronic and turn themselves off after 3mins. So no weight registered. Meh.

Whilst I was just hobnobbing with Mr Hibs, Chocobo decided to grace me with her presence by landing on my arm and, surprisingly, to allow me to bring up the camera: Mr Hibs had a lot to say about this development: When it became obvious that I wasn't objecting to Chocobo's actions, Hibs sprang into action: The peanut gallery was unimpressed:

I've just realised that Mr Hibs is a hen.

Oh no, can't be. But looking at a past photo, the cere is tan, or is that another of your clan?

Mr Hibs is a full-on boy 😁 That pic was when he was perhaps two months old, with a lilac cere. He's all blue now. I'm trying to avoid hens currently. Squeak gave me some sleepless nights when I first got him but I'm 99.9% certain he's a boy now.

Eeyore and Patch go carpet-foraging ... ... and are then questioned on it.

Ah, must be the lighting or something. Do you have a current face photo of Squeak? Hens can be a nightmare, but they are lovable too (sometimes!) I have 4. The pic you posted does feature Squeak at the back but he was perhaps two months old then. I will get a close-up of Squeak asap but it's difficult as he is guarded and shepherded constantly by the other budgies. He is terribly popular with everyone, all the birds love him, including the chocobo I believe. Four hens? You are uncommonly brave. Do they get on as a flock or are they separated most of the time?

I managed to get a clear line-of-sight just now (the others birbs were slacking I think) and after about a dozen clicks I captured a couple of images that I believe are representative. Squeak looks a boy to me, his cere colour is very similar to that of Mr Hibs. Patch and Eeyore have very vivid blue ceres, no mistaking them at all. Edit: I think I need a better/modern phone/camera.

No doubt at all, Patch and Eeyore are boys. It's hilarious that Squeak has gotten himself between Patch and Eeyore here and Eeyore can seemingly do nothing about it. Had Mr Hibs placed himself where Squeak is ... well, let's just say that all puppy-dogs would have broken loose. Eeyore invariably defers to both youngsters but Hibs, as Eeyore's former boss, gets no consideration at all.
