We have always said to the boys "watch where you put your feet when you go into the back yard" . This is also the reason we don't keep chickens: This delightful specimen had found a lovely warm spot in the middle of our garden shed (that's right, toooooo much junk and not often disturbed in there), just what an amethyst python wants for a quiet life. That is not my OH, by the way - he had the camera. @corie - true Turtle Man style.

I'll stop complaining about my saucer-sized Huntsman spiders now. I'd be terrified one of those would come in and eat my birdie in the night.

That python is so beautiful. I used to keep a diamond python and a jungle python. You wouldn't have much of a rodent/rabbit problem with that big guy hanging around.

@corie They really are rather placid, and rather slow moving. But yeah, the scare factor can be pretty high. stace They are a bit like huntsmans in a way - look scary and mean, but really don't cause any harm (except to the heartrate! ) Not to humans anyway. Wallabies, bandicoots, chooks, small dogs, cats ......... a different story .... rachel It is a beautiful thing, I agree. I am not into snakes at all, but I do appreciate it just wants a quiet life. As for rodents, we get bandicoots through our yard, scrub turkeys breed in the bush, but the worst thing is we get white-tailed rats. They come out of the rainforest and get into the floor or ceiling space and cause all sorts of problems. They will take on a roller door to get to food. Here is a photo of one of our traps after one chewed it's way out: BudgiesBuddy Funny that. Not a lot of desert around my neck of the woods.

That's scary what they did to that wire trap, I'd hate to think what they could do to an aviary. And I thought the rats down here were bad.

OMG i don't think i would be able to go outside if we had them around, and spiders like saucers . The biggest spider i have seen was in our bathroom in Mauritius, i had to get one of the hotel guys to come round and remove . OH almost stepped on a grass snake years ago that was pretty big. Do you see many venomous ones around Hezz.

rachel The thought of white-tailed rats and an aviary would be scary. Just when we thought the fun was over, here is last night's visitor: The snake relocation fellow is loving us at the moment. This one is (according to our friendly expert) a "night tiger", a type of tree snake and about as large as they ever get, so he says. This one was probably after the rats that get into our floor space. He had positioned himself on the top of the venetian blind just above the computer. OH very nearly had to change his pants when he spotted him after working away at the computer for a while. skysmum We do have venomous ones, taipans, en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Taipan and eastern browns, en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Eastern_brown_snake but happily tree snakes and pythons are more common.

I agree BB. I googled those white- tail rats, Weighing up to a kilogram, the Giant White-tailed Rat is the same size as a small domestic cat or a rabbit. They will often bite cans open and consume the contents.

He charges, Skysmum, but he also comes when called. The other guys are volunteers and maybe will, maybe won't. Sunday late afternoon and Tuesday night ...... not many will come out all hours. But yeah, more expense ......... hopefully there will not be any more...... ha ha. Pigs might fly too.

I still reckon a big bucket of water, and stick the whole trap into it .......... he won't come back in a hurry.......
