Today Mango got to properly meet the rest of the flock. I can't say it went terribly well. Smudgey did as I expected - ignored until approached and then beaked her off; Misty was just a right cow and fluffed her away whenever poor Mango went anywhere near her, ...... or Smudge, ...... or Sparky. Grrr. Misty was relegated to an out-of-the-way spot, and Mango had by this time decided that Sparky was the least unfriendly of the three, so made a bee-line for him. Ahhh, reminiscence of a young Smudge, landing on Bluey instead of beside ..... this was Sparky's fate this morning. He stood it rather well, but beaked her off when she had him backed into a corner. Poor little girl looked so confused and lonely, until she discovered their grass and tucked into something a little more friendly. These tassels have been cut rather short, but guess who decided to explore? With the other two looking on "what the hell is that bird doing???" And guess what is getting a haircut right now?? I wish I could say this was a "just chillin'" shot ........ they just happened to sit still for a few seconds.

How frustrating. I hope they become a bit more accommodating in the days to come. Little bullies.

Wonderful, just wonderful. What a story in just a few pictures. In that first one Mango is well disguised with the greenery, That would be a bonus in the wild. She looks like a leaf herself. You are spot on with the second picture. Number three shot I can just hear the rest of the flock saying "Well what the hell are we going to do about this?" I love it.

Perhaps introduce to one at a time. Who is the most amiable? Sparky?

Yes, early days yet. Marianne Marlow's suggestion is good - introducing one at a time?

Do you think the older girls are feeling a little 'shown up' - making them feel a bit dowdy - by this bright young thing suddenly appearing in their midst?

Marianne Marlow, sweetpea, I tried this earlier ... the same thing happened. Smudge first - she's too fat and lazy at the moment so only sidled away and beaked Mango almost fell off the side of the cage getting away ...... Misty next, thinking she is such a passive creature she may not even notice ....... na ah - flapped about as if the demons were after her ....... so Sparky! ..... that didn't really happen either. But, still he was the best with her, and the first and most consistent to visiting the top of her cage while she and cage are sitting beside the big cage. It is going to be a while before she goes in to live with the others. She still is just shy of 10 weeks old, so really only a baby still, but so trusting with me, I loath to give her up to the wicked wiles of the terrible twos ...... Sparky isn't included in that, except that he will teach her bad habits like flying off! He can be a right little so-and-so, especially when it comes time to go into small cage for sunshine!

Well we tried again today, both individually and as a flock. I am fairly sure the only reason Sparky is keen to visit her cage is ........ she's got food!!! Straight to the seed pot, the little beggar, so seedpot out, Sparky in, oh no, not good. Sparky out, now he is on the roof of Mango's cage ..... waits until she climbs upside down onto the roof to say hello and he bit her foot! Mango screeched like a banshee and fell off, and favoured her foot for about an hour after. Sparky is now in my bad books! So with Misty's shenanigans yesterday, I decided to by-pass her on a one-on-one basis and headed for Smudge. Smudge acts as though those baby-germs are leprosy .... eek, keep her away from me, as she backed off and backed off and almost landed in the water! Misty had to come over to make sure that her darling Smudgey wasn't being loose with her affections (I could have assured her that wasn't happening!) but didn't stay long. So! Next move, everyone into the bedroom for some outside time together. Misty was much better, totally ignoring Mango, but not causing panic flying in the flock, so that was okay. Smudge sat as still as a stone, hoping she wouldn't be noticed, I think ...... or she is too fat to be bothered unless it was a case of life or death. Poor Mango continued to follow Sparky about. He didn't get a chance to be nasty again as big mamma bear me kept her beady eyes on him the whole time. Hopefully each day will loosen the other three up a little more and Mango will be able to have outside time with them in the main part of the house .... sometime soon.

Aw. Budgies can be so naughty. We used to send Roswell in as the ice breaker and "welcome wagon"..
These days It seems to work to just release the buds into the room when all the others are out. First of all the new buds are ignored and keep to themselves. Then One of the braves ones, usually Sky will "buzz" them a few times. Slowly.. over just a day.. they are singing together from a distance as a flock..
Mine are an accepting bunch I guess.

It's quite amazing and amusing the varied characters of the birds. What works for one, doesn't work for them all.

Aww poor little Mango, I can understand her being a tad overwhelmed! No doubt things will settle - she is the youngster of the group so they will see her as a nuisance to start with but as with any change in the flock it will find a level
