Thank you Shirls. He really is doing so well, considering. Mostly he seems content enough to sit in the corner closest to the others' cage; he does on occasions get flighty and flap about hanging off the wires, in which case I take him off and put him back down onto the floor. I regularly put my hand in and give him a scratch which he is loving - I do have my uses especially for a budgie who doesn't have a leg to stand on to give himself a scratch. And had a head full of pinnies ....... we are working on them and they are getting less. I am surprised that he hasn't made any attempt at a dash for freedom. Maybe he knows it would not be a good idea.

Karen wants to see him again in two weeks, but that may have to be extended, as I am away the weekend straight after.......... and I would worry.

Ah, Nina, was just about to add an update, so thank you for asking. Besides giving the plaster a terrible time, to the extent that it looks like he has picked a hole in it , he is really very bright and chirpy. Because of this I haven't been giving him the anti-inflammatories as often as I should - he really doesn't seem to need them. He gets frustrated with not being able to fly around with the others and does a mad flap about the cage at times, but I have given up worrying about this - he has gotten very good at getting himself down off the wires gently, before he would land on his face , and I do see him put some weight on the leg as well, so all good signs. I also watched him lie down onto his belly and give himself a scratch with his good leg, so he is learning ways to get around his disability - a very good thing. I was concerned that he may have managed to do some damage to the break inside the plaster as he is holding his leg so that the toes that I can see are not straight on as they should be, but Karen assured me that it was more likely the way he is holding his leg, and it was unlikely he had done more damage. There is still a possibility that he had but she felt that a) he wouldn't be as bright and active, as he would be in some degree of pain again and b) that there really wasn't much they would be able to do anyway, if this had happened. Also the fact that I do see him putting some weight on the leg, and not dragging it around behind him as he was with the bigger and heavier plaster makes me think that he is only holding the leg out at an angle as the plaster is probably bothering him under his wing, as well as the top of his leg. Also the plaster is going to stay on (if it lasts the distance ) until Wed 27th Aug instead of coming off this Friday. I am away Friday and WEd's and Fri's are Karen's only two working days. I must admit that I am rather relieved that he will be protected for a little bit longer. He has been such a very good boy about the whole thing - doesn't try to escape when I open the door to change his "sheets" - he has an old sheet on the floor of the cage for ease of getting around; newspaper giving him no grip - or give him a scratch, in fact he ends up with his beak on the floor of the cage so that I can reach absolutely everywhere around his head. And I think he as learnt that I am there to help, not to harm; our relationship has definitely improved ........ the silver lining of this particular cloud.

All sounds good - seems like you and Spyro are doing brilliantly and all the better that your relationship is improving. I am guessing Spyro already has some alternative items for picking / wrecking available?

That is good news Hezz. Try and relax and not worry too much when you go away for the week-end (I know you will worry) but try not to. Good boy Spyro, it will all be over soon and you will be back into the mischief!

Yes, birdguhl, I have provided him with things to wreck, but I am sure it is simply that the plaster is there more than anything else. We stuck a bit of sticking plaster type stuff over the hole but Mr Nurse made the piece far too big (I only wanted a small piece to cover the hole) and so of course as soon as he was back in the cage, guess what? ?? Nibble, nibble, nibble. The boys will be left with pages of instructions as we all do, and luckily the vet is very close if needed - Cam will have to drive him there.
