You are a very brave and thoughtful person. You love your Stitch so much and don't want her to suffer anymore. Bless you and Stitch.

Thanks everyone, I'm still second guessing myself as to whether this is the right thing and the right time, but the alternatives are her dying in a much less dignified and peaceful way. My mum is coming with me to the appointment, so if I can't keep myself together, she'll be with Stitch when it happens. I'm still unsure as to whether I let Blue see her when we bring her home to bury, anyone have experience with this? Will seeing that she's gone, and not just left him, help him grieve better? This whole situation is awful

The vet we saw was the best she'd seen thus far, he tried to drain the lump, which he did successfully.
However he was concerned that there was more to it, and that leaving it would cause her death, he suggested local anesthetic to remove the skin.
He did remove the skin, but it revealed the fact the Stitch had been suffering with ovarian cancer (or at least a very large tumour throughout her body). She passed while the vet was explaining this to us, in front of us on the table.
I'm thankful she was under local at the time.
I am absolutely heartbroken that her last moments may have been filled with fear and pain, and that she was suffering with this for god knows how long. I am just focusing on keeping Blue happy for the moment.
Thank you all so much for the support x

So sorry you have had to go through this. I am sure Stitch knew she was loved. She is free of any pain & suffering now & hopefully is tucking into a whole field of millet, under a bright rainbow, with all our other buds who have passed over.

So hard I know when Sid passed, it was during the night and when I came down the following morning Mischief was looking down at him lying on the bottom of the cage and 'calling' him with a single note that sounded rather forlorn She did this for a few days and after a couple of weeks I gave in and got a new pair of budgies for company for her. Hopefully after your initial heartache and grieving you may be able to do likewise?

I was planning to leave Stitch in the cage afterwards, but she was open from the minor op and I didn't want to traumatize Blue, although I'm not sure if that was the right decision. I did consider rehoming another budgie, and I still haven't totally ruled it out. I have however secured a place at an amazing local rescue for him in an aviary with other budgies should that feel like the best course of action. Either way, I'll do what I feel will be best for him, whether that be with me and a new mate or at the rescue, I'm waiting until the feelings aren't so raw Thank you again, I can't believe how hard this whole thing has been. The vet said the the tumour was talking up much of her body cavity, and likely been there for YEARS. He said it explained why her cere was never the typical female brown, rather a pale blue, and the fact she was always unable to lay despite mating and nesting. It was more traumatizing then I anticipated, as she passed during the procedure and looked bloody and open and so so weak and vulnerable. I had hoped for a peaceful death, and I'm not entirely sure she was granted that. I am however relieved she is no longer suffering, I can't imagine how much pain she would have been in for a long long time

Rest in Peace, sweet beautiful Stitch. Keep her cute face and happy song close to your heart, and she will be with you forever. Stitch was loved by many from around the world. I hope she meets all our wonderful budgies who have gone before her. They will show her the ropes. I know you will do what is best for Blue, just like you did for Stitch. It is a very difficult time for him also. Hugs to you both, and your mom.
