Yes it is a collared dove. Hezz, I too thought it was a duck when I saw it on the grass. It survived the night, yay and is still eager to eat, is pooing well too and is alert and curios. So far so good.
It's not uncommon for vets to put wild chicks to sleep in the UK apparently. I was reading a pigeon forum and there was a warning that this is common practice in the UK because they don't know how to look after wild birds. So if you find a wild bird take it to a sanctuary rather than the vet. Doves and pigeons are the easiest to hand rear though.

He was a bit less active than yesterday and his crop was taking longer to empty so I thought maybe he was cold. I am now walking around with him down my top with tissue round his bum. He seems much happier and more active, his crop is emptying more quickly too.

Ah perhaps you smell of dove (the soap type!!) s/he will certainly be nice and cosy there We had a spare cage from one of our budgies that we kept and have used it as a 'hospital' cage for waifs and strays that fall out of trees etc but thankfully haven't had to use it very often. You're doing a grand job

I had him in a small box with some hay, kitchen roll and a soft toy to make him less lonely but it just wasn't warm enough. I suppose even if his mum wasn't sitting on him he would still have had a siblings warmth.

Would a hot water bottle in the box help. You're doing a brilliant job. Hope to see more pictures of him.

He's adorable! Do you have any idea of his age? I think, judging by some pictures I have seen, he is about 13 days old.

Lucky for him(?) that he is past the tiny chick stage. It sounds like he won't mind a bit of budgie seed when it is time for self-feeding. Since he survived the night, I feel his chances are pretty good.
