Yes I have noticed many birds will come and feed in the garden as long as I keep still, but as soon as they see movement they fly away. Blackbirds seem to have a different kind of eyesight in that I have had them come quite close whilst I was still, but then they seem to see me and scoot off into the bushes, even without me moving. Doves, wood-pigeons, sparrows don't notice I'm there until I move. Even the slightest movement. It may well be different in the countryside. Have you any idea on how long you may need to keep the feeding regime going? Or is it just guess when he stops asking to be fed.? Not sure about the feeding OP. I am winging it, pun intended. He doesn't seem to be eating as much as when he was smaller. Not sure if that's odd or not because I would have thought he would eat more as he got bigger. But on the other hand he isn't growing as fast and I make the food thicker than when he was tiny, but his crop still isn't as full as it was then. He has been eating more seed today. Pecking about and actually getting quite a few seeds, not enough to fill him up but it's a start. I will just follow his lead. When I feel he's eating enough seed regularly I'll drop the number of feeds so he eats more seed until he's not having any feeds. Does that sound right? Believe me this is all a big learning curve for me.

I can't say whether it's right or not, however I would be thinking what other things do they eat? I always see them picking in gravel, general garden dirt. I can't say I seen them eat worms and the like. Blackbirds, sparrows eat worms so why not doves. Google will probably tell us.

Sure enough Google knows all about them.

They eat seed and corn. Captive bred doves are fed budgie seed, that's what I've offering him and he's been eating it. His mouth is too small to eat corn just yet. They eat the soil because they need the grit to grind their food. Unlike buds they don't shell the seed, it goes down whole so they need more grit than buds.

I think there is a default size preselected on the upload form. It might be worth checking it next time, just a thought. It seems unusual that a nervous type of bird like the doves are being so comfortable with you. It's marvellous. She's his mummy, why would he be stressed

You have done a fantastic job starlingqueen, he is definitely going to make it now, after your love and care. I have alwayss found that collared doves are a little 'slow on the uptake' in moving out of the way be it cars, people, whatever, it seems to take them longer to make up their minds than other birds.
