A baby collard dove. They nest in our very tall pine tree every year and this poor little baby fell out and was laying on the grass underneath. I rang the vet and they said I could take it in to be euthanised as they are not in the surgery over night to feed it and the chances are it will die anyway. I can't put it back in the nest as it's so far up and the parents of pigeons and doves don't recognise their chicks once they fall out of the nest so they wont feed it even if I get it up as high as I can. So, I am going to try my damnedest to hand rear it. I have already fed it as it's crop was empty and it was squeaking. I happened to have some chick crumb for when willow was sick and a rescue site said they can eat that. I have to mix it with water and put it in a bag, cut off the corner and the little one sticks its beak in like it would it's parents mouth and sucks out the food. It ate really well and is now sleeping on my lap under my laptop, keeping warm. I think it could be a long couple of days and nights. There is the probability that it will die but I'll do my best.

Oh bless you starlingqueen, you are so caring. I must admit I would do the same. Hope you can help the little chap to live, they are such lovely looking birds. I have several visit my garden. Do let us know how you get on. You so need a medal for all the love and care you give all these creatures.

Thanks all. He's just had his second feed and all seems to be working well. Crop emptying and pooing well. Luckily he's not still on crop milk so can eat other food. I gave given him some guardian angel with his food. I'll keep you all posted.

I'm surprised to hear that collared doves don't recognise their young, we have a pair that come regularly into our garden for a drink and they pair for life. I've also seen them pecking about in the grass? It's good to know there are people like you who care when I personally get fed up hearing about all the abuse and neglect of wild life and domestic pets in UK! Here's hoping all goes well

Here's hoping all goes well They don't recognise them out of context if you know what I mean. If I could have put it back in the nest it would have been OK but left sitting on the floor they wouldn't have seen it as theirs, they also may not have found it as they don't make as much noise as other baby birds who call for their parents. Doves only make a very faint cheep. Plus it is too young to not be brooded by a parent so would have got cold very quickly. Not to mention the foxes and magpies around here.

I am horrified at the thought of the vets putting it to sleep. What a waste of a life! Good luck with the feeding, hope the poor little mite makes it.

I too am horrified that they suggested euthanising a probably healthy chick. Such a good job we don't all think like that, honestly I'm flabberghasted!! My best wishes to the little guy and well done to you for stepping up to the task of being his temporary mum.

SQ, did you mean collared dove? I thought it was a duck when I first looked.
