Marianne Marlow, don't your little guys get some seaweed supplement sprinkled over their food??? Maybe some years ago, but not now no. I don't think they liked it.

Don't get me started on organic food, OP. I leart many moons ago anything that contains the Carbon atom is organic, therefore anything that has been or is alive is organic as all living things contain the carbon atom, therefore all the food we eat is organic. Sooooo how come some food is all allowed to be called organic but others are not? ? Scientifically it doesn't make sense. And before anyone gets into the whole organic food debate, I do know what they mean by organic food, organic farming, growing etc but at a basic scientific level it is all *&%$#@.

I was under the impression that it wasn't necessarily the "organic" label as all foods are organic Hezz OP, it is what pesticides/chemicals we introduce that doesn't make it organic. So if you grew vegetables and used pesticides then they cant be certified as organic. EVEN if you grow your own veg "organically" and a farmer so many kilometres away used pesticides your food still wouldn't be classed as organic? Or something like that! Anyways, am still not sure about the kelp (organic or otherwise) thing, but guarantee it would be law that I would get it and the buds wouldn't like it which leaves me thinking back to lugols iodine.....

In my opinion, the iodine is the only sure-thing here. It's easy to administer and you know they drink it.

Agreed, Marianne. As I said, Sam, I know the whole supposedly "organic" food labeling blahblah, but as it all still contains the carbon atom, scientifically it is bullS@#%.

Also I think that sometimes it depends on what form the vitamins take. Some seem to be easily absorbed by the body and some do not. The lugols iodine seems to be easily absorbed.
No point in giving something that doesn't even get through.
I'd keep with the iodine on a maintenance level in the water and give them plenty of vegetables.
As far as I know your vet didn't say that Alfie was deficient in anything else?
You can give the vitamins and egg when they're moulting of course for extra support.
I'm no vet, but that's what I'd do.

Well its all gone to pot now Alfie is really not well I have put him back in the main cage and it is making me wonder whether the vet was right that it is a behavioural thing? In short, despite his ENORMOUS eating and appetite as well as eating grit, cuttle and even the IODINE block he has started regurgitating again and weight shot down to 40g! Yet again I have separated him off IMMEDIATELY and given him a buffet of Multivit coated fresh foods and groats. He is in one of the smaller cages I have with no perch, no toys and is in the warmest part of the flat. I have placed a thermometer on top of his covered cage to keep a check on the temperature ensuring it is between 30 o to 35 o C. It just seems impossible as he was doing so well? Did I put him back too soon? God help me *sigh*

Bringing up clear mucus Being sick then? could it be Tricho? Well I'm not sure? I did say this to the vet but Alfie is not actually being sick as in throwing his head around everywhere throwing up seed or other matter it is just clear mucus? Dare I say then is a crop swab in order? If so I am going to have to re-mortgage something somehow?!

Oh dear, that reads as very nasty if that's what it is. Let us hope it is something else. Otherwise would the rest of the buds be in danger?

Actually with megabacteria, they look like they're eating lots but they don't take any in.
Yes I agree that going back to the vet and insisting for a crop swab to find out what it is.
Do you think they could give you a payment plan?
Could also be a crop infection and maybe the iodine could have kept it at bay for a while?
So, separate him, feed him millet, get quote for crop swab and see if you can have a payment plan. I'd also give him lots of attention so that he's less stressed about not being able to be out.
They're such a worry these little ones.
