My Squawk has not been well since Friday so I had to take him to the vets tonight. He had an X-ray which showed up an enlarged liver which is pushing up into his lungs and affecting his breathing. He's had liver problems for ages but the pellet diet has been sufficient until now. The vet has recommended he has milk thistle drops and L Carnitine. She is going to send me links to the items I need to buy from Amazon (can't get to Holland & Barratt because of work) but I wondered if anyone could also recommend some products . The vet and I were looking at A Vogel milk thistle complex but I've read somewhere it contains alcohol which I understand is harmful to budgies.
Thanks in advance.

I use the same one as sweetpea for Pip, Jane. skysmum recommended it to me. I gave it, if I remember rightly every other day for a week (two drops in 50ml water) then three times a week for a couple of weeks. Now she has it just once a week. Make sure you shake the bottle before using it, and I keep it in the fridge (whether that's right or not I don't know!!). Good luck, it seems to work for us as I am still using it!!

Poor Squawk ![:(](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/sad.png) . He has done so well up until now though Jane. As Shirls said i use the same Milk Thistle, ive never heard of L Carnitine being used before though, a quick google tells me it's a fat burner/vitamin, it will be interesting to see if that one works, has she given you a dosage for that?

Nature's Answer is the milk thistle that I use as well, even though I have to import it. It is the only one I found that stated that it was alcohol-free.

Thank you everyone. The vet has recommended powder form and sprinkle a small pinch once a day on his food. I've emailed her as not clear if I do both at the same time or alternate days. I have ordered it today to arrive tomorrow. I'm lucky we have an Amazon locker at work so I will get the delivery. I can't copy the links as it defaults to my Amazon app but I've taken photos to upload for you to see. ![](https://s13.postimg.org/9v65hzyib/image.png) ![](https://s13.postimg.org/vhl5z1cib/image.png)

I'm sorry Squawk isn't feeling well. I hope the supplements help him feel better Thank you criswell. I picked them up today and he's had his first dose tonight. I just want him to get better. Hes been a bit vocal tonight so that's a good sign. He's more relaxed in his own cage which has helped.

How is Squawk doing Jane?
Thanks for the recommendations everyone, I have ordered some of the natures answer alcohol free milk thistle for Custard.
His infection seems to have gone but I am wondering if the baytril could have made his liver problem worse, i.e. put a strain on it.

His infection seems to have gone but I am wondering if the baytril could have made his liver problem worse, i.e. put a strain on it. Thanks for asking Marianne Marlow. He's picking up and his droppings (urine bit) are changing colour from green to yellow so hopefully a good sign. His breathing is still a bit laboured but his energy levels are increasing and he's singing again and showing an interest in toys. He's still separated from Chirpy but they had a play date yesterday, only for half hour as I didn't want Squawk too stressed but I'll build it up so hopefully they can go back in together soon. Luckily I'm off work now until Wednesday and off all next week which I'm so glad for so I'm around to keep an eye on Squawk. As I've said before on here they are noisy devils which can drive me mad lol but the silence is so much worse. Squawk's quietness last week is what alerted me in the first place. Hopefully I'll be holding my ears again soon 😄

What has been wrong with custard Marianne Marlow? I know when mine was on baytril before he had Avipro Avian in his water for a few weeks. I'll have to look up your posts on Custard; I've missed so much.

Hi Jane
Custard had a massive sneeze/coughing fit one night in December, I got an urgent vet appointment the next day and he spent 2 weeks on baytril, twice a day.
He already had liver issues, he has a beak that overgrows, I need to trim it every couple of weeks and sometimes his toenails do too.
The infection seems to be gone but he just doesn't seem quite right, looks slightly puffy sometimes and snoozes slightly more than I'd like. His droppings can have a little too much yellow in them too.
I do wonder if the baytril has put a little bit of strain on his liver.

I'm glad that Squawk is picking up, hopefully he'll be back to himself shortly, being really loud!
How old is he?
I don't know Custards true age as the guy that had him before me got him from someone that found him outside. He's been with us about 4 and a half years.
