I'm glad there are still supplies in your area ladybird and I'm sorry you won't be able to take your trip. It seems really surreal that the country has gone from being very casual about the virus to full blown panic more or less overnight. I hadn't heard that about the gym jellybean but I'm not surprised. My student's brother is only in his early 20s so I'm sure he will be fine. Like you, I really wonder what things are going to be like after this. Working as a home tutor teaching science I've been able to answer all the questions that my students have had. They are more worried about not being able to take their exams than they are about catching the virus. They've all been very interested to learn more about it. I've also been doing more reading about viruses for my own benefit. tweetiepiesmom People should have immunity against Covid-19 once they've caught it but the experts are being cautious about this since it's a new virus and they can't be certain although it is likely that people will have immunity. I think the experts don't want to commit to saying that just in case it's not true.

The mayor of Los Angeles came on the news and made a similar announcement samwiseg as your MP. We have also had a couple of people offer to shop for elderly people. I am also a bit concerned about going stir crazy since I live alone and don't have family around. Parks and everything are closing down. The government is recommending that people only go out for groceries. Hang in there, this will pass. We are being told that symptoms show up anywhere from 5 to 11 days after exposure. I wonder if once you've had the virus does your body make anti-bodies against it so you'll have immunity? The main thing about this we must get to grips with is that it's a VIRUS. So not bacterial. We cannot get antibodies to this as it is just like with flu. Even if you have a flu jab it doesn't stop you getting the flu it only helps your body deal with it if you do catch it. So our governments logic of creating a "heard immunity" is a rubbish statement. So no is the answer, you do not build an immunity, this will happen again and again and will probably mutate in years to come. They are working on a vaccine to aid in our bodies with dealing with it but this no doubt won't be out for a while.

I have Ocado every week and they only thing I can't get is String Green Beans, which I can live without. My daughter in North London cannot get an Ocado deliery for nearly two weeks. Our local co-op has fully stocked shelves except for toilet rolls, I just don't understand the mentality of it.
We had our cruise cancelled and have not received our money back and now Tui are asking for state aid. Thank goodness for insurance and ours is with the bank, so hopefully they are sound.
My friends are fit 70 year olds and I cannot see them wanting to stay in for 4 months, I actually agree with Scotland and ask people to limit social contact.

My mum is 69 and I cannot think that she would want to stay inside for months either. I have respiratory disease and am also immuno-compromised so I guess they'd want me to stay inside too.
Our asda still has no toilet roll, kitchen roll, hand gel, hand wash or soap!
But we went to the local mini market yesterday and got a pack of 4 toilet toll and a pack of 2 kitchen roll. Thankfully they were limiting them to 1 per customer.

I'm in my 70s (just) and I have a couple of health conditions that put me in the high risk group. I play bowls but the club has announced that it is closing for the remainder of the indoor season. Not sure what will be happening at the outdoor club so I could be looking forward to a long boring few months. I'm not happy with the way our government is handling it. I do understand the herd immunity concept - if enough people catch it and recover, then the virus will have fewer host bodies to occupy and therefore the risk of coming across infected people is less likely and the environment will be safer. I'm not sure it will work like that though, looking at how other countries are affected.

We are all just waking up and getting on with our day here in LA. The announcement has been made that all movie theaters, gyms and restaurants except for takeout and delivery will be closed. All the schools have been closed. Most grocery stores are changing their hours so they will not be open 24 hours to give them time to restock shelves and sanitize. They will also be limiting how many people they let in at a time. Haven't all the people doing the hoard buying gotten everything they could possibly want? I have everything I need but I would like to get some fresh veggies and fruit.

this is the other thing.. they are saying have a good diet to keep you healthier, but if you are either self isolating, cannot go out for other reasons, how can you get fresh fruit etc..
I think the UK was very slow to act, but re Italy and China, I feel they were caught out, so it has escalated the way it has. us here and the rest of the world have had time, thankfully to put some measures in place.
There are also so many who have had it mildly, and did not even know they had it, the figures we hear about are just those registered with it.
I just managed to get a packet of dried spaghetti, although the fresh pasta has 5 week fridge life
The plus side of this - for me - if food becomes harder to get.. I will be thinner but have grey long hair instead of tinted and styled lol
I am not sure if I am in the higher risk group as at the tail end of recovering from sepsis, but not taking chances.
App my sister in law is now in self isolation :-(

Not quite true, re immunity. You can develop immunity, built antibodies to viruses. The trouble with viruses is that they often mutate faster than the body can adapt. Every cold and flu is a different strain from the one you had the year before; that's why you get the cold or flu "again". A small glimmer of hope - I just heard on the news that a vaccine has been developed and a brave soul in Washington where the outbreak first occurred here has volunteered to be the test case. Granted this is just a small step but at least its happening.
