Face masks are compulsory in shops as from today in Scotland.......We shall see. Sorry, looks like I have inadvertently deleted both jellybean's and sweetpea's reply. sweetpea's comment was "does that mean social distancing is no longer required in stores now?" To which jellybean replied that people weren't being very diligent about it, but that she would still be keeping her social distance. Sorry, guys ... I'm not sure how I managed that! I would hope it would mean both, but like you I've noticed that people are not very good at it right now - the biggest reason that Melbourne is now in the middle of a critical second wave. I'll happily be the grumpy old bit*h glaring at those who get too close.

I think unfortunately people who didn’t get it, get it even less - ie were wearing masks so can mix nearer
Some of my family are in Melbourne/Philip Island.
My other worry is that we are opening gyms, pools - we are not waiting and watching as well as we could

I'm certainly hoping that people here in Scotland will be complying.
My big task today is to make more masks for family and friends. I love using my sewing machine so that's nice and it is very good to use up fabric I have had lying around for years. Some of it goes back to when I used to make cotton trousers for my nieces - both of whom are now in their 30s!

If masks are effective then why the additional need for social distancing? If they are not effective then why make them compulsory? Seems odd logic to me.

Seems like the evidence suggests that they help a bit, in addition to other measures. So, it is a cumulative thing. Not one or the other.

What the medical community here is telling us is that the typical cloth face mask protects everyone around you from getting the virus if you have it. Many people, particularly young people, have the virus but have no symptoms and hence are unaware they have it. Those people and ones with minor symptoms are spreading the virus around when they go out in public without a face mask. If everyone wore a face mask, the public spread would be stopped. The other thing that is happening here is family members go visit relatives and while visiting don't wear a mask. Again, young people who have the virus but no symptoms are spreading it to family members. Then all of a sudden mom, dad, aunt, uncle are hospitalized sick with coronavirus. When the extended family is tested, the young person shows a positive test without ever having any symptoms. In the old days we used to call those people "carriers" but I haven't heard that term being used "yet". THe only mask that protects both you and everyone around you is the N95 medical mask. You can buy them, they are disposable so are single use masks but they are expensive, about $5 each (Alexa tells me that is around 3.98 pounds.).
We are seeing a rapid rise in cases and talk of a second surge. We are anticipating a second close down.

It’s all so awful. Had my hair cut yesterday. Colour is next week. The guy who colours had it badly for about 6 weeks. He’d self isolated when he found out his father in law had it. This was pre lockdown. Sadly his father in law passed away, then his brother in law.
Boris considering if people must wear masks in shops?? Just do it I say

I went to Morrison's this morning, EVERYONE had a mask on, they were giving out masks at the door to anyone who didn't have one.

Excellent idea. As not everyone can get hold of them, afford them

I dont think its do they work to take care of you per se, but it protects others because your breath/water droplets are not spreading to others. So if you are a-symptomatic then you dont infect all the people you are around. I cant agree more sweetpea

It all seems extreme to me. Admittedly maths isn't my strongest area, but they say that 90% of covid deaths have other health conditions, that leaves 10%, allegedly 'healthy' people dying of the virus. In the UK, 10% of 658 (deaths per million) is 65.8, which means a death rate of .00658. By all means protect the vulnerable, but why transform human society on such figures?

The logic is a bit like this ..
I'm wearing a mask in shops or anywhere there is a 'crowd'.

blue48 I am seeing similar notices being posted around here in stores, etc. I believe they want people to understand why masks are required in public because so many are not wearing one and questioning why they should wear a mask if they are not sick.

If masks are effective then why the additional need for social distancing? If they are not effective then why make them compulsory? Seems odd logic to me. I heard it’s like you have seat belts in cars but also air bags, both things help in their own way & together they complement each other. I don’t understand the problem people have with masks to be honest. My mask protects you, your mask protects me &I’d rather have some short-term discomfort wearing it than the long-term ‘discomfort’ of getting it! But I’m severely, chronically ill & mostly confined to bed anyway so maybe I’m viewing it from a different point to many.
