jellybean If a person is exempt from wearing a face mask I think they have to present an authorising letter saying so. Most people here (Scunthorpe) are complying, thankfully.

@cal, there will be no need for them to produce such a letter if shop assistants are not allowed to challenge them in the first place.
Just makes my blood boil, as others will follow suit.

Sorry, I thought shop staff could challenge. It makes me mad, too, it doesn't take that much effort to comply.

On the UK government website:
"The public are asked to be mindful of people who are exempt from wearing a face covering. The list of exemptions, which has been in place since face coverings became mandatory on public transport, includes hidden conditions such as anxiety or panic disorders, autism, breathing difficulties, dementia, reduced vision or if you are with someone who relies on lip reading to communicate."
Challenging someone who has any of these conditions, particularly anxiety related, could trigger their condition and/or affect their mental health. I think we need to 'be kind' to those with hidden disabilities. Personally, I believe that only a tiny, tiny amount of people are selfish or unkind. Whether you believe with someone's view or not, for the most part, individuals are making decisions based on good intentions.

Whilst I am sure some people are exempt, the vast majority are not. Those who are exempt can apply for a certificate. I am exempt because I'm an asthmatic but I still choose to wear a mask. I went in Asda a few days ago and there were young lads without masks clustered in groups, they can't all have been exempt and they weren't social distancing either.
There is such a slap-dash attitude to taking precautions, I can't understand it. There are 41,000 people in this country alone who have died from C-19 and some people just don't care. It makes me so angry.

I am exempt due to my breathing condition. But I choose to wear a mask because I also have extreme anxiety and do not want to be challenged about why I'm not wearing a mask by other people.

Makes me so mad too. Other than any exempt, Tesco didn’t make people wear one. The sign outside said they had to. I’m not sure this will ever go away, just because of the nature of it. But it would be massively reduced if people weren’t so selfish and didn’t have the lack of responsibility. My hairdresser said he had friends who went to Croatia. Were back before the change in needing to quarantine, but all 4 of them did catch it. So even though they’re quarantining as not well, no one has contacted them to check.

In my city, we also have the requirement to wear a mask in public indoor spaces (including the common areas of apartments and condos), with the medical exemption for those that can not wear a mask. Problem is, you don't require any kind of medical documentation stating that you can not wear a mask for health reasons. So between the people that just don't wear a mask because they don't want to, and the ones that wear the mask but it's either hanging under their nose or chin, it does make it harder for those who genuinely cannot wear one because of breathing difficulties caused by a medical condition.
It makes me crazy, because at the local strip mall, you frequently see the offenders (some of which include shop employees) doing this kind of stupidity. I wonder if they think of the people they could be infecting if they got the virus; we just found out a relative got covid and was dead within a week.

Ellie stories like that are just heartbreaking because that death might have been prevented. We also have mandatory mask wearing in California except for people with a medical condition. Signs are posted at all store entrances. Initially, store clerks did point out the requirement to people who entered without a mask and offered them a disposable mask. Unfortunately a few of those people started a fight with the store clerk so no one challenges them any more. The medical authorities are saying that a full clear plastic face shield is as good as a mask and might be worn OK by those with underlying conditions. They are available with a 2-3 week delivery time from Amazon. In LA one of the TV stations did a survey of people out and about, recording who was wearing a mask and who wasn't. Only 50% were wearing a mask correctly, covering the mouth and nose. Only 60% had a mask on at all. People seem not to care about "public" health - maybe they think they can't catch it?

I made a few masks but I also bought some 3-ply paper ones from Aldi which are so much nicer to wear. Very light and much easier to breathe during wear. They also have the wire over the nse to keep my specs from steaming up. Cheap enough to throw away after one use too although I usually make them last twice. I hang them in my car and it's probably at least 48 hours before I wear them again.
I have boycotted Asda as they are rubbish at enforcing mask wearing. Our local Co-op are very good. I do try to get out shopping as early as I can, even if it means queueing.

I haven't seen queuing at any of our supermarkets in ages, everyone seems to just walk straight in.

I think there are only queues when people are waiting for them to open.
There doesn't seem to be the rush to panic-shop any more.

I have been randomly chosen to take part in a Covid research study, consisting of 16 swab tests throughout a year, and possibly a blood antibody test. I wondered if it was a scam as you get paid, but it seems to be legit. www.ndm.ox.ac.uk/covid-19/covid-19-infection-survey
