Fingers crossed TPM, I hope the vet can get to the bottom of the problem. It's been a really worrying time for you.

We are home! Buddy and Tweetie Pie are back together. It was a reunion to bring down the house! Both guys are chirping and kissing on each other.
The vet said he had a bacterial infection in his crop. She said they usually get that by eating contaminated fresh food. Sprouts are the usual culprit so she said to stop feeding them those for now. She said broccoli and carrots are good substitutes. She gave him a broad spectrum antibiotic shot. She said he was also dehydrated so she gave him a rehydrating solution. She thinks he may really not like the ACV water and to only give them that every other day at the most. She said I should be changing their water 3 times a day.
Since Tweetie Pie got so stressed out being put in the hospital cage and then everyone else got stressed out, she said next time just put both of them in the hospital cage. He's a good weight, 27gms and she said his plumage was a brilliant color. He got a big sprig of millet and birdie treats from her.
We are all happy now.

So, so relieved that you are all safely home, your boys are back together and poor Tweetie Pie has been treated. Such a stressful time for you all, you poor things. Hope you all get a good nights rest and that Tweetie Pie is feeling better very soon x

Glad you got some answers and have a way forward to treat him. Sprouts can be a bugger for contamination, and one reason I'm not into doing them for my lot. They are a great food but there are inherent risks with them.

So glad that you didn't have to wait till Tuesday and got an avian vet to look at tweetiepie.. It has been such a stressful time for you guys. Glad that all is well and they are back together.
I have been sprouting seeds as well, since it takes just a day to sprout here..and spraying vinegar during sprouting process. But, maybe then I will instead steam those instead. Mine seem to like the soft food too.. I'm skeptical about the bacterial growth too! I saw two flies around my grass outdoors.. I'm not sure if I'm super skeptical, but I have a net cloth and I'm planning to cover an area there, so that they get the required sunlight but stay protected from flies. I find flies disgusting and a source of many illnesses. House doors and windows are all with nets, so there's not a nuisance inside. But, outdoor balcony isn't covered. I'm going to plant some more plants today, and will keep everything covered under the net cloth.

TPM I am so glad you have been able to get it sorted out. It sounds like the same sort of thing Casper had. He has been much improved since starting his antibiotics on Tuesday. Hopefully Tweetie Pie will be the same.

Thank you all. I can't believe how stressful it was for me watching poor Tweetie Pie continuously trying to get out of the hospital cage back to Buddy. When we got home, I opened their flight cage door and held the hospital cage door up. Tweetie Pie didn't think twice - he was out in a flash and over to Buddy. The good news is that later in the afternoon, I held a millet bauble for Buddy. He flew over to my hand to eat and then Tweetie Pie flew on to my hand to have some. The little guy is a millet junkie! mona and Hezz I'm going to do some more research on keeping sprouts from getting bacteria and/or mold while growing them. They take about 3-4 days to grow here now. I'll look into rinsing them with ACV and how to do that and then keeping them safe in the refrigerator for the 4-5 days it takes for them to eat them. This morning they are back to their normal routine. Buddy's running back forth to Tweetie Pie wanting to play and kiss him while Twetie Pie just perches calmly looking at him!

I’m so glad Tweetie Pie is okay and everyone is happily back together again!
That’s very good to know about the sprouts... And that he was dehydrated from not drinking enough water.
So far my buds all seem ok, and I have been newly using an ACV rinse before providing the soaked seed (I basically stopped sprouting them completely as the weather has been getting colder), but I may halve the amount of soak and offer dry seed the other half of the time upon hearing this.
Also, I put ACV in their water every evening and take it out in the morning, replaced with diluted aloe water, and then plain filtered water when I change that midday. I got iodine drops I just started using the last three days (in case they were deficient), and now going to use once a week here on out. I’m going to monitor them a lot more closely this week to make sure they’re all definitely drinking just to be safe. I’m pretty sure they are, because I’ve seen all of them individually drink the ACV and aloe water without any sign of complaint, but who knows how big a gulp they’re actually taking? And the iodine is new now too so...
Anyway, thanks for updating us!
P.S. Don’t forget the probiotics for a bit, since he just got a dose of antibiotics. Ask your vet about it though, not sure how long or what with a shot. I’ve only ever given oral meds so far.

tweetiepiesmom - a question just popped into my head. Did your vet tell you how she knew Tweetie Pie was dehydrated? I just googled it and it says to look at the skin around the eyes, etc., but just curious if she used another method.

Regarding the sprouts, I usually rinse it every 10 to 12 hours..but that comes down to a less washing, owing to the weather and sprout time at my place. I keep spraying it with vinegar too. I taste some before giving to them and take it out within 2 to 3 hours. Also, I have never deep freezed anything for myself too, so honestly I am not very good at it 🙈
I generally refrigerate it for only one day, in all sprouting for only 2 days. The moong beans visually starts changing color on the borders to a extremely light brown, if seen under the lights, still doesn't change in taste. If I see that, I usually throw all of it in the soil instead. But, apart from sprouts, I do steam cook moong beans, brown chickpea etc and mash the brown chickpea a bit. That's sometimes easier than sprouts (to be honest, when I'm short of time). They seem to love the soft version more than the sprouts, but the softer version looses more nutrients. I just make sure not to pressure cook it, to avoid loss of more nutrients. For the time being, I'm giving them the steamed version. During winters, sprouts would not degrade soon, but summers, I guess it will.
Hearing about tweetie pie's suffering, I'm just a bit more skeptical about sprouts. Maybe I'll not refrigerate and sprout even lesser amount, just for a day.

Morgan I didn't ask my vet how she knew Tweetie Pie was dehydrated. She'll call me on Mon or Tues and ask her. At the same time I'll ask her about probiotics. Yesterday Tweetie Pie had just eaten some seeds, he came out and did that mad dash flying around and landed on top of the cage. About 3-4 seeds slipped out his beak. He didn't cough up any more seeds the rest of the day. I'm hoping its just the antibiotic needs a bit of time to do its magic. I'll keep an eye on him. The vet did say that sometimes it takes another shot to get rid of everything. I'm hoping not since treating Tweetie Pie is so stressful on us all. Thank you mona and Morgan for giving me more details on how you take care of your sprouts. My guys really like the sprouts so I'd like to continue to provide them to my guys.

Rinsing is very important, that I do know. It is hard to only do small amounts, enough for just two little budgies and keep it fresh. Most of us don't have the time to be constantly keeping a batch on the go so it is tempting to try to cover a few days. Cooler climates should make keeping them fresh easier, as in the tropics everything goes off, grows nasties very, very quickly. That's why I like the grass so much - at least it just dries out during the day, but it isn't an option for everyone, I realise.
