Charlie seems well in himself, eating, drinking, talking….but I noticed he was having some difficulty getting around his cage, His left foot isn’t gripping around the perch and he keeps having a chew at it. He doesn’t seem in pain but his foot definitely isn’t gripping properly…….any ideas please…

His front long toe and back one are sticking out and don’t bend and curl round the perch.. He is moving around his cage but keeps having a chew at that foot as if he can’t make out what’s wrong with it.. …It’s a normal colour.

Wonder if he’s knocked it, or cramp kind of thing.

Just been watching again while I did the ironing 🙄…..He isn’t moving around as much as normal, and when he does he stumbles a bit and then holds the leg up, he also keeps stretching that leg and wing out a lot….I hadn’t seen him go down to the bottom of the cage so I have just put some seed and water near his perch. He is chatting although not as much as usual. Ohhhh I worry so much 😢

Poor Charlie. We do worry ourselves silly don’t we? Hopefully because the foot isn’t swollen it won’t be any kind of infection but something like cramp as ffiscool suggested. Is he weight bearing on it? Sounds like it might be a lack of sensation if he doesn’t appear to be in pain, hence the stumbling and stretching the leg and wing out to regain balance perhaps because he can’t understand why it’s not working properly. They are so small and fragile I can imagine even a small knock can cause potential temporary nerve damage. I really don’t know but trying to guess definitely isn’t the answer. I hope he improves as the day goes on.

Thank you. Yes he puts it down for a while and then tucks it under again. His foot isn’t swollen at all and looks ok. The breeder has just called to look at him . He says it’s definitely not broken , but he isn’t clenching it together properly to grip. He’s advised against taking him to the avian vet because the stress could be so bad for him. It’s possible he has had a mild stroke or maybe he has just knocked it…. Hopefully he will improve slowly. I don’t think I will let him out today, just keep him rested. Anyone know of a cure for STRESS for me? 😢

Maybe an anti inflammatory could help.

Anti inflammatory would mean a trip to vet?

Worse case scenario would be a tumour pressing on the nerve, or a stroke.
Less bad is that he's pulled a nail by getting it stuck in something.
Odd for the breeder to say that the stress of going to an avian vet would be bad for him, unless he thinks he's had a stroke?
How old is Charlie?
Are you able to hold him and see if he has any sensation in his leg or toes by applying gentle pressure?

Charlie is 2 1/2 . The breeder held him and pressed on his foot while holding him ( on the pad) he said Charlie should have clenched his foot when he pressed there. He seems to think Charlie has maybe caught a claw and it’s affected a nerve,in which case it should improve itself….or yes could be a mild stroke. He is able to climb around the cage but it’s definitely affecting his mobility somewhat……..If he doesn’t improve I will definitely take him to the vet.
