Charlie has been doing well, eating, talking a lot and just generally doing well….But….this morning when he came out and flew to me I noticed he landed on one foot. His left foot seems to dangle and the toes curled up…..he is hobbling on it and keeps biting it ,,but he doesn’t seem in any pain….He is currently sitting on my foot chatting away. I am wondering if he has had a slight stroke? He is not on any medication now……just hasn’t needed it…… Any suggestions would be very welcome please.

My Mr Hibs has a lame right foot, I think I've mentioned this to you before. It may have been an injury or it may have been a stroke, although he's young to have had one of those.
After a few days of his foot being clenched and after a lot if worry on my part, a measure of use returned. He is now able to walk and perch on the foot but it is obviously not right and never shall be. When the vet examined Hibs, she found that his whole right leg was seized up and tensed and she couldn't straighten it. She wasn't hopeful. After ten days, Hibs was able to stand on it briefly and after two weeks, he was running on it, albeit clumsily. He's fully adapted to it now.
I hope you experience a similar (or preferably better) outcome with Charlie, Ladybird.

Thank you Lozhinge that gives me hope….. My Charlie is a little fighter so I will be hopeful too. I am not taking him to the vets, just going to see how he goes on. It would be different if I thought he was in pain but I don’t.

Thank you for the update, I've been wondering how he's been getting on. Sounds great that he's been perching on you and chatting away. Sorry about his new foot issue but hopefully it'll get better in a short while and he'll be using it again.

Poor boy, but hopefully that will ease and he’ll adapt as need be. The fact he’s talking and eating is great.

Sorry to hear about Charlie's foot. I'm glad he's still lively though. Hector had a similar issue, he stopped being about to use his foot, the consensus was arthritis, I used to massage it for him with aloe vera gel. I also had to clip his nails as they ended up overgrowing as he could not use the foot. budgerigarsforum.proboards.com/thread/16629/hector-lame-foot?page=1

Is he still on the metacam? If so, that is good, there shouldn’t be any pain, but watch the biting as he is biting either out of frustration or pain. It may be that he is trying to get the foot to ‘behave’ or it may be feeling pins and needle-like. Has he been xrayed with all that has been going on with him? The other possibility besides a seizure is a tumour pressing on a nerve.

This morning Charlie’s leg is the same. He is getting around his cage alright but his foot is still part paralysed. He either keeps it curled up or splayed out to the left. No he has never been xrayed the vet deemed it to dangerous for him. As for the Metacam, if I thought he was in pain I would give him some, but he is eating and lively, so I hold back because I know it’s bad for his kidneys. When he came out before his bedtime last night, he didn’t want to stay long because he was getting upset because he couldn’t balance. He wouldn’t let me touch his foot but it felt warm on my hand. I don’t think a vet visit will get me anywhere or you know I would take him….. For now I will keep a close eye on him, and definitely give the Metacam if needed. I am keeping fingers crossed it will improve 🤞🏻🤞🏻🙏🏻

I'm no vet nor am I an expert budgie wrangler but I agree with your thoughts here on Charlie.
X-raying budgies is hazardous and it must be a very rare event indeed when the x-ray can tell you something that you can take successful action against. Satisfying your concerned curiosity is not reason enough, in my view. Pausing the metacam, again I would do the same in your shoes.
If it is Charlie's fate to have a foot he cannot have the full use of, he will adapt. If he's happy and active right now, I would do nothing to interfere with that, which seems to be your conclusion too.

Charlie’s foot remains the same , his toes either curled up or splayed to the left. He is still biting at them as if to wake them up. He is managing to get round his cage alright….I have added a couple of perches to help him…….He isn’t keen to come out to me, he finds it difficult to stand when not on a perch. He is chatting away and eating, so little more I can do to help him. He does put the foot down when he is perching, so I can tell it’s not his leg….and I definitely don’t think it’s painful.

Can you make him a soft area outside of the cage to perch on near you? with food and water?
Perhaps a perch with some vet wrap round it.
Just an idea. He might come out if he can sit somewhere comfortable.

Sounds like Hectors too when he had a lame foot. He lived almost a year and a half after that, but he was already past 9 years old at that stage. He spent a lot of time laying down on his platform, but would get up for food and water and have an occasional sing. The symptoms sound a lot like Mr Hibs'.

I will try different things with him, but he is a bud that hates change of any kind…makes him very nervous. When he comes out of his cage, he either flies to me and lands on my hand or head…but won’t land on my finger…..if I go to cage he will jump on my hand but not my finger… He has never liked fingers . Last night I got him to come out on a rope perch. He only trusts me now and not my hubby who he used to love……..who knows what goes on in their little brains.

Charlie really is an amazing little guy as he tries so hard to adjust to his changing circumstances.
